Everyone I know is mentioning no-phone-use in their initial interviews or putting it in their ads. “Phone use only allowed when baby/child is napping or emergencies”.
You can set her straight now, OP, and add it as a condition of continued employment. |
You are the one trick pony of nanny commenters. It's not always about pay. |
Who said the child is being ignored?? Just because a person is looking at their phone does not mean said child is being ignored. If this generalization was true - then many parents would be guilty of neglecting their children. Any parent who is paying their Nanny a reasonable wage has every right to feel like they should have a Nanny who engages w/their child. Not the entire time of course > but for the majority. |
Agree. Parents have the right to talk clearly if something it's not right. Why they must be scared or afraid to talk to the nanny. She is doing that knowing she is still on camera. Wow. What a poor quality of nanny. |
OP is using her phone for personal use at her office. She needs to practice what she preaches. I have a small business and if I expected employees to make no personal calls or conduct personal business during business hours, I would be firing employees every day. |
No, OP does not have to “practice what she preaches”. Employers and employees are not subject to the same rules in this or any business. I’m a nanny. I have zero issues never touching my phone unless my charges are napping (which one child no longer does so I go a full nine hours without glancing at my phone). What the parents, my employers, do regarding their own phone use is none of my business. |
For my experience as a Nanny myself, I think we can never compare and try to take same roll as our employers. I am very professional doing my work with my charges. Even though my family is Great in all aspects and very easy going; they never set any rule by mouth of even written in control that I won't be allowed to use my phone anytime for personal calls. They know me and respect me in all ways and trust on me very much. I engage with my charges and take care of them very much and I feel more confortable and happy make all calls that I want, texts, scroll my phone, when they are napping. I really respect my Job, my employers and like to be always professional at my work. |
Same with our nanny but that is not the case with OP’s nanny. Clearly she needs rules. |
| Those who say their nanny is never on their phone I call bs. You just don’t catch her. |
WRONG. I am a nanny and I am never on my phone. Never. It rarely comes out of my backpack except to take photos and, even then, fairly infrequently. I used to use the phone when the kids were napping but my older charge stopped napping last year. I wear an Apple Watch for emergencies and for my employers to contact me. It’s insane to think it isn’t possible to avoid your phone during the working hours of a day. I’m on the west coast (if you’re checking the time stamp on this post). |

My sister (retired teacher) is a nanny and cannot be on her phone except for emergencies. Her employers trust her. I am a school employee and I can only use my phone on my 30 minute lunch and my 15 minute break.
It's no big deal. |

Rule at our house / in the contract: phone goes in the purse or back-pack and is not removed unless the child is napping.
We have had 2 nannies and it is not a problem. Nanny knows we have nanny cam if we need to check. We prefer nannies 40+ as this is expected in the workplace. |

It is no big deal to be on camera. I am on camera at my work, as are many folks these days. It's a security issue.
It is also a great way to control anyone's over-use of a phone while at work. |
+2. Another nanny here who never touches her phone while working. |
