We are totally isolating (except for DH’s grocery run) so we have a closed system. DH and I are both working from home but my work is very slow.

Our nanny knows she can choose to stay home at any point. We’re keeping it fluid. But she loves my son and he loves her so much. It would be hard for both of them to be apart for long!

i've just found out (from my household payroll company) that in maryland our nanny is technically not allowed to come since we are not essential workers. She wants to come. I know we should pay her either way, but what a mess from a tax standpoint. I'm torn as we are both working from home with two very young kids. not sure what to do.

Could you please share a link to your pay roll’s company statement regarding essential workers?

Maryland:

Unless a family’s child care worker is another family member or a friend, only essential workers may continue having their child care employee work in their home. See the Governor of Maryland’s order for more information.

Yikes , that’s not cool. Why would it matter if they are a friend or family member if they are still coming from outside the home. What is a “ friend” in this context

I have no idea, it’s very confusing. I’m trying to find out more but the governors order they refer to doesn’t clarify any of it. We

Childcare CENTERS are closed to everyone except essential workers. Nannies and sitters were reportedly allowed in dc, va, md. Anyone seen something from the government saying otherwise?

7 states in-home childcare is essential:

Persons Providing In-Home Child, Elder, and Similar Care. Providing care for children, senior citizens, or persons having special needs at the Home of the children, senior citizens, or persons having special needs, as the case may be, is considered an Essential Activity under paragraph II.b.iii of the Order.

Families with child care employees can continue having them work in their home. See the Governor of Maryland’s order for more information.

still, not worth the risk, IMHO. No "full-time job" is worth a human life. Nanny, or you, can be a no symptom carrier. If, however, both nanny and family were each completely self-isolating for 2-3 weeks, to make sure neither is sick, THEN it would be safe to resume within the family-nanny circle.

Ok Care.com changed their guidelines for md must have been a mistake. Makes more sense now.

A few states (like California) are saying that nannies are only essential for essential employees, but there are only a few. The vast majority of rolls understand how hard it is to wfh without childcare.

But a lot of parents are doing it (WFH without childcare). This is an extraordinary situation. Yes it sucks but the more people who continue to leave the house to go to work the less SIP measures become effective.

I’m less concerned about a nanny going straight from home to work, then straight from work home.

My concern are elderly people like my uncle (82 this year). He’s a widower, 6 years now. Doesn’t cook at all, burns scrambled eggs and won’t try to cook much else. He’s been going to restaurants for 2 meals everyday for years. Now, he’s in and out for takeout for 3 meals per day, then a trip to the post office, grocery store, hardware store, etc. He stays 6-10 feet aware from employees, but he’s starved for interaction with someone, anyone. And since he’s extremely technophobic, FaceTime isn’t an option for him. He won’t stay on the phone more than 5 minutes.

Frankly, people that social distance correctly are fine.
