She would have said yes for more $ and lots of perks for sure.

Sorry to burst your bubble, OP.

While I agree that New York, Boston, Chicago, or California are more desirable than DC, Washington is not one of the last places APs want to be. You are conveniently forgetting the rest of the county (Texas, Ohio, rural VA, etc..).

We lived in Chicago, and while all of our au pairs ultimately loved it, not one had remotely considered going there. We’ve found DC to be an easier sell.

+1 no way Chicago sells better than DC.

Meh, I don’t agree with any of that. My observation in the Facebook groups is that the desirability of locations by au pairs can be ranked as follows:
1. Anywhere in “California;” since most don’t realize that California is not just Santa Monica
2. Anywhere, literally anywhere advertised as within 10 minutes of the beach; this includes Florida, South Carolina, etc
3. NYC if you can say you’re 10 minutes from the beach

After that, Toss up between Boston, NYC and DC— honestly I talked to a lot of APs who were rematching from or avoiding those areas because of the weather and focusing on DC cause it’s a little more south.

MAYBE then you get to Chicago. And then everywhere else.

Imagine ending up in Bakersfield!

When i was an exchange student in Brazil my host family's niece was also doing her year in the US. She had dreamed of California, Florida, New York... she was sent to Topeka, Kansas!

She ended up having a great year and has been back to visit half a dozen times over the last 20 years... and on those subsequent visits she finally got to Florida and New York
