This exactly. Based on that incident, I would wonder about potential alcoholism. |
I strongly doubt any parent who took TWO shots prior to going out is someone who only drinks on one occasion.
Two shots is a lot, it is highly unlikely this is the only time this mother drank during the past nine months. Besides, as a mandated reporter it is not judgmental to take notice of a drinking nursing mom. The OP needs to be fully aware of things going on which do not appear to be right and could possibly harm a child. |
This thread is so super judgey... she had the equivalent of two drinks.. maybe that is all she is having... maybe she wants to drink them early in the night so she can pump and dump and be fine by the time she is back home to baby.
If this is the only instance of drinking can you all stop clutching your pearls and calm down? I think it is very unlikely alcohol is to blame.. likely the exclusive breastfeeding and not letting the baby learn to fall asleep on their own. |
I’m going to assume that you don’t know about different metabolizing rates. As I posted earlier, alcohol metabolizes within 2-3 hours per drink. Therefore, 2 drinks is 4-6 hours. Many, many medications stay in a person’s system for over 24 hours. Breastmilk has similar alcohol content to blood; medications might be higher or lower in breastmilk than in blood. |
I find it absolutely appalling that on a website designed for parents that it seems the majority of respondents think it is okay to drink while still nursing.
Look: Each person is unique. So no one rule for everyone can apply. Meaning all of us metabolize alcohol at much different rates. It all varies from person to person. Therefore experts cannot determine exactly how much or even how long liquor stays within one’s body. There are no hard + fast laws. Since that is the case, it is better to err on the side of caution & simply cease drinking (even socially!) when in the nursing stage. Being a parent takes sacrifice and responsibility. If one cannot substance from drinking for a year or so - - This does not bode well for a healthy baby. Babies change dramatically during their first year of life. Why take the chance that a baby may suffer physiological effects by allowing anything to pass into your milk supply. Some parents eat healthier, take more vitamins, etc. during this delicate time. What’s next?? People are going to say smoking is okay while nursing? SMH. |

“Delicate time?” Good grief.... |
Criminetly! Every doctor will tell a nursing mother that they’re fine to drink as long as the alcohol metabolizes before they breastfeed. |
What Quake doctors they must be. Sorta reminds me of the 80’s/90’s when Drs would tell their breastfeeding patients that they couldn’t get pregnant while nursing. |
Quack physicians. |
Please provide evidence-based link showing 1-2 drinks while breastfeeding causes damage to baby. |
I already posted the CDC link. You think they’re quacks? |
The link literally says 1 drink has not been shown to harm infants you complete moron. Pumping and dumping is not a thing, your milk alcohol content is the same as your blood alcohol content. |
All my friends and i pumped and dumped. All bright kids.
Over=reactive parents on this board. |
The only reason to pump and dump is to relieve pressure. Otherwise, just wait 3 hours per drink, then pump. |
