NP here, but I am guessing that she doesn't pay rent, utilities, food, or transportation. That's not uncommon in live in situations. |
This. |
| Get an Au Pair. It's perfect for one. |
"Cheap" isn't always the best option. |
| Why did you have kids? You basically have someone else doing everything |

I know a family in a very similar situation to you OP and they switched from a nanny to an au pair and it has worked out well.
They have 3 kids and need morning and after school care. The au pair does parts of the morning routine and gets the 3 kids to school, then picks them up after school has has them 3-4 hours depending on the day. It has been an adjustment for sure to have this young woman in their home. She is quite serious and is strict with the kids but overall a nice person. It is by far the best option they could come up with. |
Some people have to work and commute long distances. Does that really mean they shouldn't have kids? |
You have no clue if OP is right there with the nanny but needs extra help. Do not judge, PP. |
Yes, I pay both my and her share of all taxes. I also pay all of her expenses, except for her personal entertainment on weekends. She doesn't have to spend any money here and sends most of her money home to her family in another country. |
Thanks, I'm leaning more and more toward the au pair route. |
Thank you. We try to be there with her as much as our work/travel schedules allow, but it is not always predictable. |
Well, it's certainly the option that OP has been favoring up until now! Seriously, those are slave labor wages. I pay a high-schooler more than that per hour. OP is terrible. |
I would not call OP names. She's getting a good deal, good for her. I think she's getting a good deal but it's not impossible to replace this person. It's a 5 hour workday, low stress. Perfect for someone in college or grad school or has grown up kids. $290 a week is not that motivating. It sounds like you're not that happy with the person you have, because he/she is not that motivated. Such arrangements are found when that's the budget and there's someone who is looking for a low stress part time gig and it's logistically easy. It sounds like this person doesn't even have to know how to drive. Not a lot of opportunities for someone like that and they may be thankful. I would not expect the world if you replace this person at a same rate. But it's not crazy, no one is dumb here. |

to everyone saying "good for her for getting a good deal"-you are the problem. paying someone $7.25 an hour is despicable and shameful, not a smart thrifty move. your children see how you treat people, and they will behave accordingly.
if you can't afford to pay someone a reasonable, livable wage, then you should stay home with your own kids-or not have kids at all. |
Well said. |
