Google is your friend here. CNN: "Ortega had been a naturalized U.S. citizen for 10 years." http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/26/us/new-york-nanny-deaths/index.html Huffington Post: "She was paid $18 an hour" http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/09/yoselyn-ortega-nanny-accused-killing-krims-money-son-new-york-city_n_2104157.html The Cut: "A fourth sister, Celia, had connected Yoselyn with the Krims in the first place, Marina testified: She was also a nanny, and her employers sent their daughter to the same bilingual preschool that Lulu attended... when Marina asked a reference about Yoselyn, it was 'all roses.'" http://www.thecut.com/2018/03/nanny-murder-trial-day-1-mother-marina-krim-testifies.html |
15.03 here. Precisely. Legal status and pay don’t matter. Parents do horrible things too. When looking for a caregiver, you have to trust references, a background check and your gut. |
|
I read on the NYT that the nanny had one reference and the mother now believes that it was faked by a family member, sister, if I recall correctly.
My takeaways from this shocking tragedy are 1) multiple references required and 2) don’t turn a blind eye to any unusual behavior. But in no way am I implying that this was in any way the parents’ fault. Tragedy can strike even the most careful and 20/20 hindsight. As an aside, I’m a SAHM and live in the same neighborhood as the Krims. This area is teeming with young families and mothers are very proactive to report abuse by caregivers they witness. If this nanny had been exhibiting any alarming behavior with her charges in public, someone would have said something and tried to find the parents. So my guess is she was not and was exhibiting only subtle changes that only people close to her such as her employers could pick up on. |
Or she showed no signs. Many people who attempt suicide don’t show any signs. I would think this might be comparable. |
| Krim didn't work, didn't need to, and should have taken care of her kids herself. |
You are truly an ugly, vile person, PP. |
Yes, clearly the natural outcome of a SAH mother of three hiring childcare is murder. She really should have predicted this. That is what you are saying. You get that, right? |
|
I've seen it said that the killer got $18/hr. Has this ever been verified from pay stubs or even an agreement signed by the woman and the parents?
Has it ever been verified that she was legally paid on the books? I'd like to know. |
Why? She was an American citizen. In any event, how she was paid or how much doesn't lead to murder, does it? |
Reread my question and check your comprehension. |
Many sahms need help to get kids home for nap while somebody else had activities, or just to get everyone to everything on time. It sounds like that’s what happened there, since mom was out with the older daughter. |
As long as you legally compensate your qualified helper, it's totally fine. |
Different poster, but I really don't see how the question is relevant either. What would be your reaction if she was legally paid on the books? What would it be if she were paid in cash with no taxes withheld? It seems irrelevant to the topic at hand, which is murder of the children. |
