What about teaming up with 2-3 other families and meeting up at one house after school? Each family pays like $7-8/hr per kid times guaranteed 3 hrs. If the nanny looks after say 5 kids, she makes a decent chunk of change which would be worth it.

NP here. Thanks PP. How many hours a week do you work?

20-30 hrs a week. I also like that they live 12 minutes away.

We had a great grad student pick up DS four days a week since January and she gave her notice last Monday. Her class schedule changed so we are back looking again. Ugh..,

What is the best way to find this care? Would it help to increase no. of hours to cover additional housekeeping responsibilities? look among college students and be ready to manage schedules between two baby-sitters - each for 2-3 days? What is best way to find regular after school care?

I did aftercare 3:00-6:00 Mon-Friday. I helped with homework and took the children to their afternoon activities. The pay was $250 per week and on occasions they would give me money to treat myself and the kids to ice cream or buy me dinner here and there.

+1 on care.com. We had to find two caregivers (one for AM dropoff, one for PM pickup -- it didn't make sense to hire a F/T housekeeper for reasons I won't go into) and I too struck out on neighborhood listservs. Posted on care.com and was stunned at how many candidates we got, even for just a couple hours' work -- it's amazing how many people were looking for just a few extra hours to round out their income. Some of the candidates were clearly much stronger than others, but we had so many applicants, far more than I anticipated.

We ended up with two fantastic grad students who are both psyched to make decent money, for an easy gig, with a schedule that fits around their classes, and we didn't wind up having to pay exorbitant amounts. Some folks on this board told us we'd need to pay $30 an hour for that kind of arrangement, but that proved inaccurate.
