How to make a PT position attractive?

I need after school help with elementary school kids. So, basically in general about 3 hours per day for 5 days a week. In looking for part-timers, i find many that are looking for the morning hours, or for full 1-2 days a week. Very few look for afternoon hours every day.

What is the best way to find this care? Would it help to increase no. of hours to cover additional housekeeping responsibilities? look among college students and be ready to manage schedules between two baby-sitters - each for 2-3 days? What is best way to find regular after school care?

I think finding part time college students is the way to go. THey'll have 2-3 classes, then come work for three hours for you.

I realize that increasing rate to top $ will make it attractive for candidates. But at some point, it makes less economic sense for me, cause I would want to pay for 15 hours less than I would pay for 35-40 hours. At some level, it just makes sense to look for full time nanny / housekeeper who would then be able to add errands / household duties.

So, is this more realistic to find than part time only after school?

My friend found a preschool teacher who was finished teaching at 2. She is expensive ($25 an hour) but worth every penny according to my friend because she is reliable, great with kids and a grown up. Place an ad looking for teachers and daycare workers with the early shift.

A college kid will leave you with every class schedule shift every semester.

1. Offer a higher than average rate

2. Offer benefits like guaranteed hours, paid holidays, paid vacation

3. Expand the position to include other duties such as light housekeeping, errands, grocery shopping, maybe cooking

I recently took a part time position. 1 child $20 an hour, paid holidays, vacation, and sick. I also liked them as a family.

$25 per hour plus benefits and paid holidays. You may need to sweeten the pot if you are in a far out suburb that is a hassle to get to in the afternoon. If it will take someone an hour to get there, you should paid more for the hassle factor.

$20 nanny here; they go away 6 weeks a year, I'll get random bonuses throughout the year, and all Jewish Holidays.

Thanks PPs. This is helpful. I guess I should cast a wider net in looking for part time nanny. I just put add in neighborhood list serve and on this board and didn't get a single response. This is why was wondering if the hours are just not attractive. The pay is within the range I had in mind, though I didn't put it in my ads. Thanks!

A good idea would be to find a candidate who lives very close by, perhaps walking distance.

Very few people would find it financially rewarding to drive across town for a few hours.
