End of Year Bonus Amount RSS feed

I am thinking $300-500 cash and some baked goods, Starbucks cards, and photo of my little one who she loves. Does that seem fair? Do nannies expect 1 week full pay as a bonus? Is OK to give a little less since she's only been with us a few months? I want her to feel appreciated, but money is tight.

Oh..I wish wish I have boss like you,you are so nice!!!

As a side note, although I frequently see the "week's pay for every year of service" rule of thumb on here, I've never heard of anyone receiving it among my nanny friends. I've also never received that, as a year end bonus or as a bonus when the families and I part ways.

You get a bonus when you part ways? How much? Didn't know that was a thing, thought you would just get last 1 or 2 weeks pay or whatever it is.

It's actually more of a severance rule of thumb; it's supposed to help encourage the nanny to stay with you until your end date, and help her over any time before a new job starts. Some people also give it as a farewell bonus, particularly if the nanny stays until the family's end date.

Like a lot of nanny traditions, this one dates more from when you might have had a lifetime servant, instead of a nanny for just a couple of years. This would have been a retirement bonus, and would have been more like half a year's pay or more.

At least one weeks pay is the norm

Anonymous wrote:I think that's a very generous bonus for someone who has only been with you for 3 months out of the year. Generally, the rule of thumb is 1 week for each year of service. For less than 1 year, it is thought that one day's pay for each month of service is appropriate, so $300-$500 sounds perfect.

+1 Exactly what I learned when I researched this last year. There are old threads about this.

My nanny has been with us 9 years and we are not giving her 9 weeks of pay for bonus. Just saying.

+1 One to two weeks pay is considered quite sufficient.

This is not common. Severance is sometimes given when there isn't much notice provided to a valued employee.

Not a troll. Just stating a fact.

I'm guessing they were your favorite precisely because of the full month bonus...!

It certainly must have helped. So nice when you feel appreciated like that.
