Didn't know that was a thing, thought you would just get last 1 or 2 weeks pay or whatever it is.[/quote] It's actually more of a severance rule of thumb; it's supposed to help encourage the nanny to stay with you until your end date, and help her over any time before a new job starts. Some people also give it as a farewell bonus, particularly if the nanny stays until the family's end date. Like a lot of nanny traditions, this one dates more from when you might have had a lifetime servant, instead of a nanny for just a couple of years. This would have been a retirement bonus, and would have been more like half a year's pay or more.[/quote]
