| I don't understand why your nanny would want to make her job harder.. Me personally I'd rather parents buy baby food it's less work for me |
Some nannies aren't lazy and care about the health of their charge. Its sad you're fine being a mediocre nanny. |
|
I am a nanny and I only make babyfood.
I also won't work for people who use store bought food, so it is just normal to make the food. Really it's not that hard. Takes some prep, especially with new foods, so you don't accidently mix foods until they have had them. Good old food processor, pot and steamer basket. Lots of ice cube trays and baggies for frozen cubes. |
This. You don't need lots of equipment and homemade limits the preservatives in shelf stable stuff. And as they grow you can add flavors like cumin etc to get them used to your food. Make a batch every time something is on sale and in season. |
I'm not lazy nor am I mediocre.. Parents want me to make food yes I can for an additional charge. Nothing's free when child naps that's my free time, making food cuts into my free time to use the restroom, eat my lunch or hell sit down and take a breath. The baby food organic pouches are just as good as making food there's no difference in the two |
Why would you be charged for making your charge food? That is part of normal duties. Most nannies do laundry, meal prep, bottle washing, etc., during nap times. When do you do that ( if you even do)? The baby pouches are not " just as good". There is a HUGE difference. In order to maintain shelf life, baby food is pasteurized at such high temps that the nutritional value is so low. It doesn't have much of the vitamins and minerals it had in it's natural state. Even if it claims it doesn't have any of that junk, it does in order to maintain shelf life. Home made has no preservatives or chemicals. You seem like a lousy nanny and employee. Charging extra for something that should be part of your duties is ridiculous. If nap time is your " free time", you must be neglecting your charge to do their housekeeping while they're awake. You sound mediocre. |
I think a 30-minute break is totally reasonable, but if the child is young enough to be eating purees, then you have way more naptime than that and should be doing something productive for at least part of it. This is why we think you are lazy and mediocre. |

I'm sorry I'm thr nanny who makes pureed baby food and I would never charge more.
I put my nutrition classes on my resume, as well as my cooking classes. And a child young enough to eat pureed food naps a lot. You can get a lot done answer still have a nice break. I have a whole freezer full at my nf home. My charge will eat purees for a while. And now she is eating just cut up foods. I cook her dinner during her long afternoon nap (yes she sleeps 2.5 hrs in the afternoon, because I worked with the parents on sleep training when she was little). I start and prep her dinner. Tonight was lamb (ground) with smashed potatoes, trim colored carrots. Puree was watermelon, pears and cucumber for dessert. I make an amazing rate for my job. And why would I feed this little person crap food. At this time, I'm setting her up for what choices she will make later. It's my job as a nanny to instill good choices in any child in my care, and that includes food choices. |
My point being is this.. If parent wants homemade babyfood, that's additional. I have no problem preparing food for the child to eat that day. As an example yesterday I prepared food for today. If parents want a freezer full of food and purees they can either make it theirselves or pay additional for me to do so. Unfortunately a family I worked for in the past took advantage of that and I was constantly having to make food because they would run through it, waste it, feed it to their preschooler who I wasn't responsible for caring for as he went to school. I explain this at every interview when it comes up and parents have no issue with me either preparing the food for that day or paying additional for a freezer full. |
| You could make daily purees but its much easier to make a batch and freeze. Its very easy to do so you are lazy. Cooking should not be an extra charge. If you have one infant at home, baby can hang out while you cook. |
The parents who I work for (nanny share) don't think I'm lazy and at the end of day, they sign my check - not you- and are pleased with my services. |

I made almost all of the babyfood for my triplet charges when they were younger. The exception was when we traveled the 3-4 times while they were on purees and we just did organic jarred food during those times.
It's pretty easy and not that time consuming. Definitely cheaper over the long run, especially if you stock up of things on sale. I didn't buy any special equipment, but my NF already had a Vitamix, so that was super helpful. I would usually bake things like Sweet Potatoes, Yams, Squash, etc. That was a time saver since I could bake all of them at the same time. I was making a pretty large amount once they were eating 3 meals a day(like the equivalant of at least 12 jars a day), so made big batches every week. In the beginning I froze them in ice cube trays, but we quickly outgrew those serving sizes with 3 babies. I then used the take and toss containers to store them in since they hold a cup of food each. I would usually make enough food for a week on Thursdays or Fridays. Would leave food for the weekend and freeze the rest to be used from Monday-Thursday with me. I froze in the take and toss containers because we needed to big servings, so I could just pull out the containers and thaw them in warm water or in the fridge. Sometimes if I caught a sale on something like apples I would make a huge batch and freeze for later use. One of the things I love about making your own food is the ablity to expose them to many more flavor combinations than are available in the store. I also love the ability to add different spices and know exactly where your meats, fruits, grains and veggies are coming from. We didn't use the pouches too much because I'm not a huge fan of them for everyday use. I do think they can be useful in certain situations though, so when we needed them I used the Infantino system to make our own which I loved. |

Nanny here.
I use a vitamin to make baby food. No extra charge because it is part of the job and I'm not lazy. It is very very easy in the vitamin, it makes it as smooth as the nasty jarred stuff. Additionally as my charges get older (like over 12 months) I start introducing them to lentils, salmon, mild spices (like cumin), sardines (yes! They are great for a growing brain), avocado, beets, and all sorts of beans. After I'm done with those kids, they eat better than their parents. |
