| Factoring in driving times, drop-off/pick-up lines, parking if necessary, showing up early, dealing with Larlo when he doesn't want to go to school and is stalling for 10 minutes, ect you are really looking at less than 6 hours of down time, not 9. Is this nanny worth losing over 6 "free" hours a week? |
Where in the original post say that they can't afford a nanny? Also, judgy much? |
You do what's best for maintaining stability for your child, not your bank accounts... Unless you're in serious financial trouble, which I don't think is the case here. Correct? |
"Our income isn't huge, so we feel weird paying for so much down time..." This is stated in the op. What is feeling weird? As if paying someone for caring for their child isn't worth the pay after that person has been with them for a while. Yes I am judging. If you can't afford a nanny then don't have one. Just put your child in daycare and miss work when your child gets sick. have someone part time to pick them up. But it's a very entitled mind frame to think its ok to pay your nanny back by reducing her pay but still wanting her to work for you or be available "just in case". |
This! |
Having an income that is not "huge" is not the same thing as not being able to afford a nanny. You need to work on reading comprehension.

Do you understand the context of the posts??? Why mention it? They want to nickel and dime where a lot of families wouldnt think twice because they aren't concerned about downtime and feeling "weird" about something. They obviously want to be cheapskates. Have their cake and eat it too. Punish the nanny because they want to put a child in school before it is really developmentally necessary then worry about paying someone because they feel the person is not "working" enough. Hope the nanny finds a family that understands she needs to support herself also and won't try to down her pay. Op will realize the mistake she has made soon enough. Just wait till the child gets exposed to all of the foreign germs in daycare as they get acclimated and need to be picked up here and there due to illness. We'lol see how she feels about nickeling and diming this "downtime" then |
It's good that you are not in a job that requires critical thinking and attention to detail. |
Perhaps your child doesn't require an adult with critical thinking skills. GL with that. |
lol what is this? Some sort of dig at the nanny profession? Do you hire idiots to watch your children? Working in the ec field most defintely requires critical thinking skills and attention to detail. You thinking it doesn't is very telling of why most parents can barely raise their own offspring and get others to do it for them so they can slip in when it's time to eat then go to bed. I agree, that part of child rearing doesn't require much. |

If she is reiable then why would you decided to drop her pay ?
Do you know how hard it is to find great care for your child . have her do other errands if need be . If you tell her this you don't want her leaving . This is your choice to send him to pre school not her . she riles on tis income . |
First, your downtime won't be 9 hours, what with drop off and pick up. She will likely have just a couple of hours free time at most. That is not hard to fill with errands, shopping etc. She may not be great at cooking or cleaning but how good do you really have to be? |
| If you don't want to pay her for those hours, be prepared for her to quit. Otherwise, you continue to pay her, in part for keeping her schedule open for you on school vacations, etc. |
| Mb here. Our 4.5 has been attending pt preschool for 2 years now. First year she went about 10 hours or so per week but we also had a newborn (which she got a raise of about 2.50 more per hr). There are a lot of days school gets cancelled during winter and then there's also summer. Spring and winter breaks. Or days your kid is too sick to go to school. Our 2nd also slept a lot for 1st year but not all kids nap all the time. Our nanny uses her time we'll but we don't give her a specific list of stuff or anything. Plus our main focus has been caring for our kids. We think it is fine if she gets some down time every day. It is the reality that pt preschool and ft nanny is the most expensive option. |
| This is so strange. Both my kids went to preschool. Nanny dropped them at 9, picked them up at 12. OF COURSE I paid her for those hours. She's on call. If a kid vomits, are you hauling your ass out of work to get the kid? I didn't think so. |
