Why is 19$ an hr absurd? |

We earn $500-600k a year between us. Our childcare, nanny and preschool, costs about $60-70k for 2 kids aged 1 and 3.
I earn $110k a year and have what I would consider a good job for a 34 year old. I often wonder how people that don't have a spouse in a lucrative job (or family money, which isn't us) manage. |
I'm the 19/hr poster. I should also mention that I have four kids, and only one is in all-day school. So I think it's a bargain when I add up the daycare fees plus the aggravation of driving somewhere every morning.
Now, my oldest son's private school that we're paying for because I made a big mistake with housing when we moved here? That does feel absurd. |
our HHI is over $1M and we overpay for everything!
I just ate a $50 Big Mac - delish! |

We earn about $220k and can't afford average nanny rates for two kids, forget the ones getting $60k. Friends who make about $300k together had a nanny FT but they hired ones asking for a low range (due to limited English ability). |
So, what do you do? Can you afford good daycare? |
We earn between $200 and $225K depending on how much overtime my husband does. We have a share in the DC area for 50 hours/week (and pay above board/actual OT) and pay about $35K/year. We pay about the same amount for our nanny as we pay for the mortgage and both of those expenses combine to account for nearly 2/3rds of our post-tax income. It's just the way it is with small kids in the DC area. |
We earn $200k, pre-tax, between two incomes. Our nanny earns gross about $43k annually for two kids, but we also pay a fee to a payroll agency and we pay for WC coverage, so it works out to about $45k a year for us. Yes, it is cutting into our savings BIG time. ![]() |
