had this not been offered to me, I would expect compensation of some sort - perhaps like the PP said about the share rate vs single rate - because although I do not live paycheck to paycheck, it IS my income, it decreased through no fault of my own, and the share rate per family is lower than I would charge per a single family (ie if I make $10/hr/family in a share I wouldn't be a nanny for one child for $10/hr)

You are not entitled to money just because you didn't do anything thought your own fault. People get lose their jobs all the time through no fault of their own, that's life. It was your job to keep a share going, why you think you are entitled to more of Family A's money just because you have less work is beyond me.

wow. the family moved away due to a death in the family, so I didn't have trouble "keeping them." secondly, if it really was "my job" to keep the share going then I could have just left the other family in a lurch and gone on to a single family for more money. you are ridiculous

What single family would pay you more than a share?

When this happened to us a few times we upped to a 1 child rate which was about half way between what we normaly paid and what she normally got. This gave is both a strong incentive to find a new family ASAP. That said I was the primary be hunting for the new share family. I saw it as primarily my obligation to find a new family and that is as a happy family seeking another one was going to have better odds than a nanny reaching out looking for more work/money.

are you an idiot?

a share is $10/family. to have your own nanny it is $15/hr. as a nanny, why would you nanny for one family for a share rate ($10) instead of nanny for one family for a single rate ($15)

This happened to us recently and we paid the full share rate for two weeks.
We love our nanny and wanted to keep her happy. And it's not THAT much more per week
for a few weeks...

Unless the nanny organized the share, I don't understand how any of this would be her responsibility. When you form a share with another family, figuring out what to do if one family wants out should be part of it.

The nanny didn't accept a job for half the money; she accepted the total amount with two employers.

If I were a nanny, I would read this and decide never to do shares!
