And my husband the undocumented immigrant - attended college (with no financial support), obtained his masters and now works for our school system supporting families and kids in their education. Please tell me where I could send the bill for his social service... (And yes, he's paid taxes ever since he had a job).

Send the cost of his education, using our roads, libraries, hospitals, etc to the IRS or your local school system. Your husband's family broke the law and should have applied for sanctuary here or in another country.

You are making a truly ridiculous argument, PP. The people who hired your DH's family to work illegally should have been jailed.

He and his family PAID taxes while undocumented. Millions of people do that you know... So he and his family owes our government nothing - again maybe a big fat bill Anerican companies oppressing workers in his country so American can get cheap bananas...

I'm done. Idiots you are....

Your DH's family BROKE THE LAW in working in the US without green cards and they DID NOT pay any payroll, federal, state or SS taxes at all (or else they would be documented).

Your name calling to hide your embarrassment is pathetic, PP. Please just give up and go away.

Wow. Chill out! No, you can not run a background check.

And who in their right mind would allow a stranger to care for their babies without a background check?

I don't know what happened with her DH's family. But it is indeed possible to be illegally working in the US AND pay all the payroll, federal, state and SS taxes one would owe if legal. I know that 'cause I filed and paid taxes religiously on all the gigs I've had for years while I was unauthorized to work. Yeah, we broke the law. But the taxman got his.

Not PP but you are talking about apples and oranges. NO undocumented worker or American worker paid off-the-books is paying state or local taxes (or federal taxes) though their INCOME TAXES since they have no declared income. This chart is referring to sales taxes which do go to the state and local governments and everyone who purchases anything - even visiting foreigners - pay.

I beg you, PP - stop embarrassing yourself. Please.

You are embarrassing yourself...READ!

A study by the Institute for Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP) found that undocumented immigrants paid $10.6 billion in state and local taxes in 2010, a figure that includes $1.2 billion in personal income taxes, $1.2 billion in property taxes, and more than $8 billion in sales and excise taxes. The study found that undocumented immigrants are “likely paying about 6.4 percent on average of their income in state and local taxes,” which is a tax rate close to that of “taxpayers in similar income situations and, in many states, can be higher than the effective tax rates paid by upper income taxpayers.”

Plenty of documented people get paid off the books. You are equating - AGAIN - unauthorized employment with off-the-books employment.

OMG - BUY A CLUE, PP.

Illegal nannies are always paid off-the-books and in CASH. What the hell are you babbling about?!

NP here and I gotta agree - you are making an ass of yourself!!!

If some one entered the U.S. legally and then remained illegally, then that person would have a record that can be searched - SSN, credit history, and whether there are any criminal charges on prior addresses.

But if you literally mean undocumented - as in, there is no documentation of this person's entry or presence, then answer is likely no, no way to get an actual background check.

Yes and no. I guess you could fingerprint them but I don't know where you would find a company to do that.

Some people who are not legal to work still have socials because they are students or had some status before so in that case maybe.

Also this taxes thing ... Yes some people get paid off th books and file taxes, they can get a tax ID from IRS. Why would they do this? To have their shit in order to obtain residency down the line or to get a tax credit for their American kids.

And some get paid "on the books" with a fake social and so they are taxed too.

(Not OP and not condoning ... Just explaining how it can happen.)

How would you do a background check on someone who came here legally but has only been here for a short time? International background check?
