Wow. I cannot believe her parents haven't gotten her any new, updated toys to play with. They sound very cheap to me.
I know it isn't your responsibility, but perhaps you can stop by a local 99cent or Dollar Tree store and pick up a few items there. Also, at your public library there are probably a few used children's books for a quarter or so each. Or if you have any friends with babies or even know other nannies, perhaps they can give you some baby stuff. Check the FREE section on Craigslist as well as freecycle. |
| Baby walkers actually delay development and even exersaucers should not be used and if they are they shouldn't be used for extended periods of time. |
| Aren't baby walkers illegal? |
| PP again- Sorry just realized they're illegsl in Canada, not in the US (I'm canadian). |
| OP HERE: I had no idea about walkers being bad and illegal in Canada ! Thanks ladies for sharing this info with me. The family is still cheap, an 11mo should not still have toys from when they were 3mo. I actually babysat for them today and suggested some sensory toy I'd eas... The mom has NEVER even heard of this before. I told her I'd shoot ideas for her to approve. Hopefully we can have better play time since many items are around the house. Literally, they don't buy anything for their girls.. If their friends aren't giving it to them, the girls won't have it. THANKS AGAIN!! |

I've been with my 10-month old twins since birth.
The first three months, they slept a lot. I cleaned a lot and read a lot. Now we go to the zoo, the museums, the aquarium, the park, the pool and on play dates. We read, we play in the mud, we play outside... I don't feel bored. I did during that newborn stage, but at 10 months infants have so much personality. |

It's ok to let the baby play on their own (supervised) for a bit.
At that age we also did walks to the park, zoo, museums, and the library. Walkers are bad for babies. Push walkers are better. This is also the age for stacking blocks, playing with balls, etc. |
| Walkers are plain bad. |

Okay, walkers are bad, but there are lots of safe and useful push toys out there (granted, probably a little advanced for an 8 month old).
OP, does the mom really not want you to take them to the park because she goes there with them? Is there another park you can go to instead? What about a community center or rec center? Some have open gym times. Walks are great. If there's a place nearby that you can walk to, the baby might enjoy looking around stores -- grocery store, CVS, etc. You can also make little toys out of everyday objects. Give her a book to play with or an old box. It sounds like she has an older sibling? If so, can you use some of these toys if they are safe? |
