| I think a 5% raise is very fair given your situation. Maybe a nice thoughtful note to go with it stating that you are very happy with her performance . |
While I think it would be misleading in the DC area that something was true of "most" jobs if it wasn't true of any government jobs, the PP's claim that government jobs are not giving raises is patently untrue. Feds got a 1% COL increase this year + the vast majority of feds get at least a step increase (unless they've been working in their current GS level for more than 10 years). |
| You talk with, not to, her. Tell her the truth that this is all you can afford at this time. Chances are excellent she will be appreciative and be happy with this increase. |

OP here. Thanks to the level-headed posters on this thread. (There was a reason I directed the question specifically to parents.) I told our nanny that this was the best we could do this year, but that we wanted to do whatever we could for her. She was not only appreciative, but also thought I was being ridiculous for sounding apologetic because she's very happy with her situation here.
So if future dcum parents look at this thread for your own edification, know that 5% went over really well. |
I am just a dumb nanny who made the mistake of responding and responding positively to your post. I also wrote that 5% was fine. I am so very sorry I and the other nannies dared offer our support to you, MB. However, I'm sure you never noticed. So if future dcum nannies look at this thread to see if their employer really can only afford a 5% raise, look at the last post from the OP/MB. |
I am a polite woman, OP, and if you were crying poor to me I would react the same way to your face. Come back in a year and let us know if your nanny is still with you. |
Yes, your contempt for your nanny is clear. I'm sure you turned in an Academy Award winning performance in crying poor. I hope your nanny reads your gloating response. - one of the MB's you thanked who is now disgusted by you. |
First, why do you think the "level-headed posters" were all MB/DB's? I was one of the posters you referred to and I am a nanny and a parent. Second, so you were lying about being so financially strapped? |
|
OP a final time: What are you guys talking about, lying about being financially strapped? Why would I do that? And where are you getting that from? I don't have a paycheck right now and won't for a while. The past two years I've earned far less than our nanny, but hopefully that will turn around. I do what I can for her because I care about her. Anyway, our nanny is wonderful and I don't have contempt for people, my goodness gracious. But some of the nannies who post here are not people whose opinions I trust, which is why I was hoping for parental input.
You can save the nasty retorts, people, I'm a decent, hardworking, caring person who is not returning to this forum again. |
Well, there is some good news. Bye-bye. Once again you assume the comments that you don't agree with are from NANNIES when anyone with a first grade reading comprehension level can read that they are not. And nannies can also be parents! You are a bigot and I feel horribly sorry for your nanny. - signed A MOTHER WHO EMPLOYS A NANNY (and my son's nanny is also a mother!) |
+1 |
I'm in a job where I get annual raises, but never as much as 5%. |
