If they really have the actual flu, I don't think OP should go. The flu effects everyone differently and can in fact be VERY serious. Caring for kids with colds or common childhood illnesses is one thing, but the flu is different. Are OP's employers going to pay for her medical bills if she needs to be hospitalized? The flu can knock you out for up to 2 weeks, it's stupid of them to ask her to expose herself.

Oh for god's sake. You're in the wrong profession.

Driving can be VERY SERIOUS too. Nanny could get in an accident and DIE! But then on the other hand the bus could crash and nanny could die. So could the metro. You know what, even walking isn't that safe, someone could run up on the curb and hit nanny. It's probably best if nanny just stays home and keeps getting paid, we wouldn't want to risk anything happening.

Wow I'm surprised at the responses. As a nanny, I would say no way. What happens when nanny catches the flu and then she has to take time off once everyone is healthy again? I would either use PTO or take time off unpaid until they are reasonably healthy again. It's not like they just have a cold - it's the flu. And they ALL have it. So the parents are home anyway!

If I go into a sick home and I get sick, they must guarantee extra sick leave if I get their illness. This must be written into the agreement.

Stop being a smart ass, the comparisons you give are ridiculous. They know they have the flu, why would they want to expose their healthy nanny to it when they are home? Then they would have to miss more work when the nanny gets sick.

No, I think you should most definitely stay home.

If your bosses have an issue with you wanting to stay home from work until they get better, than they are seriously off their rockers because who in their right minds would expect their nanny to come into work and work in a household of infectious germs....??!

You are their nanny and should be treated with the utmost respect, they should use common sense and not expose you to any illness at all.

Plus both parents are at home so why would they need you to come in anyway?

When the kids get better, then they can call you and give you an update. Then you can come back to work.

My bosses always let me know when my charges are ill, even if they are suffering from a cold. They would never make me work in an environment where I am exposed intentionally to someone else's germs.

Who does that??

I always take care of my charges when they are sick and feel strongly that it is part of a nanny's job.

Wash your hands frequently today. Try not to hug or cuddle your changes and obviously don't share utensils or food.

You should go to work, OP. Be cautious and you'll be fine.

If the kids already had the flu there is no reason for her to stay home when she gets it. Think Einstein. The kids can't get it again.

OP, did you end up going?

If the family actually has flu, tested positive, you could ask your doctor for a script for Tamflu for post exposure chemoprophylaxis, it is once day instead of twice day. You might even be able to get it at minute clinic.

+2 Anyone who is advising OP to stay home is as immature and as big a drama queen as she is.

So the nanny has to come to work while sick with the flu now too. You are either a really evil employer or a nanny who has been taken advantage of a lot. If the latter please know that there are good families out there to work for.
