If you worked at all this week then you e already been exposed. Parents have nannies vs day care so they have someone to watch their child when sick. Yes the flu can be serious but if you wash your hands, avoid kisses, having them cough or sneeze on you you will limit exposure also the flu shot would be good to have to protect you, you could still get the flu but it lessens the effects.
I won't work with kids that have pneumonia or are vomiting a lot but that's due to the risk of them getting dehydrated and needing a dr asap which is easier for the parents to get done. I know people confuse the flu with a stomach bug so just to be clear the flu is like a cold but worse fever, body aches, cough stuffy nose, vomiting is rare and usually only infants and in young children or the elderly. Yes this was necessary to point out because I see it posted a lot on here and FB a nanny complaining their charge has the flu when it's really a stomach bug and people need to know the difference |
OMG you nannies whine |
Everyone has been tested positive for the flu, I wouldn't post it if I didnt know it for sure. Please tell me how I can avoid the kids from coughing and sneezing on me? They're three and two. |
| OP I think there are good arguments either way. What would sway my decision is whether the family would cover my sick leave if needed or if I worked for multiple families. I am in a nanny share so I do not work if one of my charges has a stomach bug, I can't imagine any professional way to handle vomiting or terrible diarrhea at work and keep after the kids. I will work if its the flu or cold though just because by the time we see symptoms we have all been exposed and the symptoms are not so embarrassing/debilitating if catch it. |
| I'm in this boat right now family is home sick with the flu and I feel sick too. No fun. |
| If the parents are home, why can't they take care of their own kids? That's what we as parents must do while sick all the time. |
| I hope you didn't work, OP. I had the same scenario. I have been home for over a week with the flu. I had a flu shot but this year the shot isn't coming close to touching this strain according to my doctor. Good luck! Hope you are well! |
Have you had the flu this year? It's horrible. There is no way I could work with the flu! You should think before you speak, Einstein! |
| It is unreasonable for them to expect you to come in when everyone is sick. Tough luck, but I wouldn't get near them. |

I know this is too late, but as HM, I find these responses shocking:
1. If the entire family is VERY sick (flu qualifies) then no way would I even have the nanny come. 2. If my kids are VERY sick (flu and vomiting qualify) as the mother I WANT to nurse my own children back to health. Certainly if my kids have a basic fever or nasty cough that is keeping em home, I have the nanny come, but the big stuff is my job. I guess we all have different levels of involvement in out children's lives. |

If you are scheduled to work and the parents want you, then go. Taking care kids, even when sick is part of the job.
To prevent catching it wear hospital gloves and a mask. Ask the family members to wear a mask too. You should be able to buy them from a medical supply store. I'd also build up the immune system by taking airborne, zinc, high doses of vitamin C, etc. You've probably already been exposed so I'd try to build up the immune system ASAP. |
