I charge at least $22 for two infants. I can negotiate though. If you want me to cloth diaper, do housekeeping, and make homemade baby food then I will charge more. If the employer offers to pay employee portion of the taxes, covers health insurance, pays transportation, etc. I can go lower bc its all part of my salary in the big picture. I also worked in corporate HR for years so I have a better handle on how to negotiate compensation. Most nannies probably would not find it pleasant to have to barter with you. |
Very true. I was a preschool teacher prior to becoming a nanny - I have a masters in ECD and years of experience and great references as a nanny - and I am incapable of bartering especially for a new position. If I didn't like the offer, I would just walk away. PS I never do housekeeping that is unrelated to childcare regardless of the salary bonus but would see making homemade baby food and using whatever diapers you decide on as part of my regular nanny job with no additional salary bump. And I would probably ask 22 to 25 to start as well. |
I'm sorry that your post seems to have been derailed, OP. typical share rates in DC range from $18-$22/hour, split evenly amongst the families. The rate increases for increased experience, education, and skills pertinent to your own needs or desires (able to make homemade food, speak and teach a second language, teach baby sign language, drive, etc.) |
As someone who has done cloth diapering in a share I will say that it was sooooo much more work for me. I was doing diaper laundry 3 times a week, in addition to both boys clothing laundry. I would suggest that any nanny taking that on in a share should definitely factor it into her rate. Its simply not the same amount of work as regular diapers. |
Just hired a nanny in dc and this was my experience too. Though we did find that most of the nannies worth interviewing were balking at $18/hr. We got someone for $20. FWIW, I found it helpful to ask people when interviewing if they have a rate, because many nannies will tell you theirs. |
I would never consider hiring anyone who didn't tell me a rate for the work I want done. Even highschool kids are past that phase. |
