Forced to work with a baby in a 42 degrees home.

I think they're being completely unfair to you. I would suggest talking with them again and asking to have a couple of rooms heated, or to have a space heater that you can use in the areas where you will be. If they refuse then, if you can swing it, I would tell them you need to start looking for another position. You really enjoy working for them but can't bear shivering all day long at work. And what the heck will happen in the summer?!

I'm sorry OP - this is just wrong.

Too bad if their heat bill goes up. My electric bill increased about 40% over the last month because I'm using the heat more. I'm not going to freeze my ass off and neither should the nanny. Hopefuly by the time it's an issue she will have found a new position

I'd just turn the heat up when they leave and turn itback down an hour before they get home. Honestly, it would never occur to me to ask to turn the heat up. I might mention it at the end of the day as an afterthought...oh btw it was cold so I turned the heat up to 68 or something. they probably have it set on auto and don't realize it's set so low during the day. I hope that's the case anyway. in any event I'd be looking for a new jobbecause they don't sound very reasonable.

MB here and honestly that would be my advice as well.

Do they turn it up when they get home for the nighttime? I'm just curious since you said they are comfortable with the temp, but I'd imagine it gets much colder at night. Have you told them that is is 40 something degrees in there? Better yet taken a screen shot? I'm just wondering if they truly have no idea because they turn up the heat as soon as they get home? I can't imagine how cold it gets a night, but must be way colder than during the day! So, what happens at night?

If you've had this conversation with them and they still won't turn up the heat, just document (I prefer email so everything is there in writing), turn up the heat when they aren't home, and start looking for a new job. No one should be left in a cold house all day.

The only logical thing you said is that the nanny should get a new job. The rest of your suggestions are ridiculous.

42 in the playroom? Ridiculous. I would tell them that you cannot work like that. If you can't turn up the heat after that look elsewhere.

Can you take the baby out? Go to a library or something for a while just to warm up.

I feel sorry for the baby.

There has to be some place to report employers like that.

I think it must be on auto if you are not exaggerating OP. if they are otherwise good employers there is just no way any sane person would force someone to work in temps as cold as you describe of you are indeed already layering.

Not exaggerating. The playroom doesn't have heat. I'm supposed to leave the door open to let the heat in from the hallway. Sounds good in theory but the hallway isn't much warmer.

How does a room in a house not gave heat? It has to unless the system is broken.

If this is real start looking for a new job.

It's an add on type thing. The space used to be an unfinished attic. It has a window unit for ac in the summer, but nothing for heat.

After you get a new job, report them to CPS. They can learn the hard way if they must.
