What to pay nanny for 5 kids? RSS feed

These are older kids including a middle school and elementary school age child not 5 babies and toddlers. There is nothing outrageous about it. OP, most of the nannies here are 1 -2 baby types or maybe a share occasionally.

My suggestion would be to have a clear and orderly schedule in place for what happens after school. As long as you have a structure what happens when the 3 older kids come home, there is no reason why a nanny can't watch one toddler all day, and a preschooler half days. The time when they are together shouldn't include any activities or running around. Try to keep it organized or free time for the kids so the nanny isn't running around and balancing too many competing needs.

Advertise what you can afford and see what it gets you. If you can afford 10, 15 or 20 state it but be clear upfront.

I nannied for 5 children (9, 7, 6,6, 4, 3) and made $25 an hour. MB was also a SAHM and most days I only had 3 kids as she was doing activities with the other 2. Only housework I did was make meals and cleaned up after ourselves. They provided all my food as well as a nanny car/ credit card for purchases while we were out.

It was a great gig and I was sad to leave when I found a full time job in a different field and they got an Au Pair.

Granted, taking care of 5 kids is hard but not a ratio that seems crazy since the ratio for kids in a daycare is around that. It also doesn't sound like there many hours that the nanny would have all 5 kids at the same time.

Daycare children are all grouped together in the same range with the exact same schedule the ratio at any good center is no more than 4:1 max. Plus they normal have a floater teacher to help out in a class of 4:2, so that's three teachers to 8 children. You also don't have to do laundry, cook meals or any other typical household duties. You also get a full lunch break because there other teachers to take over for you. Plus no parental figure to override your Authority and someone available to cover a shift if an emergency happens.

By the way there are plenty of nannies with multiple degrees or working towards their second degree. Just because your career field is different doesn't make our jobs less work or insignificant. Not all nannies are lazy or unproductive, just like not all nurses lack social skills and empathy. I volunteer on the oncology ward at children's hospital, I watch interactions between staff and Patients. Some of you need to change your line of work.

^^ 8:2 ratio*

4:1 is an infant ratio. Number of kids to caregiver goes up after that. By preschool it's 10:1 (or more).

Get 2 au pairs, or 2 nannies

I am considering a nanny job, wondering what I should charge? The family has a 2yr Old, and 4 year old that I will care for from 7:30am-6:30pm, after 3:30 I will additionally care for a 5 yr old, 8 yr old, a 10 year old a14 and 16 year old that don't drive yet. So 2 full time and the others for 3 hrs. I will be cleaning up after the kids, morning dishes, lunch, etc. I am first aid and CPR certified, and have 3 years of college. What should I charge. I'm thinking $20/hr for the first 2 and $30/for all the rest. I will also be living in their boat house apartment.
