I love my family and I love giving gifts so price doesn't matter as long as it's not more than $30 usually.

OP here, the kitchen set I was looking at was about $80. It really isn't outrageous to me whatsoever, but I have a feeling the parents would be just a little uncomfortable, so I have decided against it. I would never want them to feel like I am trying to upstage them. I just know that he would love it and money is no object to me when it comes to gifts. He has started to become so enthralled with pretend play, which they don't foster enough (lots of puzzles, books, way too advanced games). They have already gotten him a gift, but perhaps I will suggest is for the holidays. Thank you everyone!

Could you find one in excellent condition on craigslist instead? I had an Mb that didn't like new stuff all the time so I got a brand new used item for half the store price.
