You are one of the most clueless posters ever on this forum. If the parents can't afford a loss of income, how in the hell do you think a nanny can? Of course she's going to immediately job hunt. Duh. |

You have reading comprehension problems, 19:24.
I never said a nanny should stay on if she can't afford a loss of income. In fact, I said OP should explain the situation and let the nanny decide IF she can wait out the shutdown. If the nanny can't, she will move on, as she should. Try to keep up. |
| Haha idiot pp, you really think cutting back on fancy dinners will = a nanny's salary? If there's no money coming in, NONE of the expenses can be covered. |
Great post! This offers great insight as to why some nannies here have such entitlement issues, you must really believe that people who employ nannies are filthy rich and can afford to continue the same lifestyle even when their income has been put on hold. You're incredibly wrong, but it's interesting to get your delusional perspective. |
People who have zero savings for emergencies, simply can't afford elite childcare. And no, pita poster (not the OP), you're not entitled to the bigger house in town, either. Sorry, pita. |
This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard!! I am not a nanny and I was once laid off because the place I worked wasn't doing well financially and couldn't afford to keep me on. I'm a human too. Does that mean the owner of that business should have suffered in providing for his own family? Or should he not have had a business to begin with? And no, I didn't get any severance when I was laid off either. Do you think a nanny is exempt from problems the rest of the world faces? They have no idea how long the government shutdown will be and BOTH parents will have no income for that time. Zero income. It doesn't mean when they are both working they can't afford a nanny or even that they couldn't afford a nanny if one parent was laid off but it's a whole different situation when BOTH parents aren't working. By your standards the only people who could afford a nanny are those that are so independently wealthy they could pay a nanny without anyone in the household having to work. If that was the case then there would be a whole lot of nannies out of jobs. |
People have savings for emergencies like not losing their house or healthcare emergencies. The OP said she had some savings but it would use up most of it to pay the nanny. Most normal people would understand why they were being let go but those of you entitled nannies on here think you should be everyone's number one priority. Thankfully I know most nannies in the real world don't think like you. |
Good thing you know why everyone has savings. Enough said to you. |

The poster who is calling others a PITA is just a troll. Ignore her.
Most nannies recognize that they are part of the greater economy. If that economy tanks, or the government shuts down, they will suffer like the rest of us. It's an awful truth, but that's the truth and smart nannies will adjust, either by getting a new job or waiting it out. |
| I think you should do your best to pay your nanny. You are not losing your job. It is a shut down and you will have a job to go back to. Understandably a nanny may only have a job because of the parents working, but as the employer you have an obligation to pay in less you are terminating her (regardless of why). A nanny for 2-3 kids is often cheaper than day care. I have friends who have a nanny because it is cheaper and as the kids get older they prefer day care but financially the nanny is more cost effective. |
There's no "others". It's just you. You seem to be oblivious that most nannies don't earn enough to "wait it out". Go back to your hole. |
|
Omg, 20:29, you seriously can't read.
I already said that if a nanny can't wait it out, or doesn't want to, she should get a new job. Are you really this stupid or do you just love trolling? I'm guessing you just love trolling because I have a hard time believing anyone who takes care of children for a living is this stupid. |
+1000. She either just enjoys saying obnoxious things when she can hide behind her anonymity or she really just is that stupid. I don't think there is any way she is a nanny. Maybe she's an out of work "nanny" because no one will hire her with that attitude. |
The $52/hr nanny can wait it out for you. That's about it. |
|
OP, it's your choice if you pay your nanny or not. If you like her, it is wise to pay her through the shutdown if you can find a way to do it. You could offer her half her hours and pay her accordingly. May be she would be willing to help with other work around the house if you don't need her for child care during this time. Try to just discuss it with her to see if she's willing to work with you. You might luck out if she's willing to take some time off for herself during that time. If you can't/won't pay her through the shutdown, I hope that you are sincere with her about the situation, and understand she might find another job during that time.
