She's nothing but jealous. Feel sorry for her. |
I seriously doubt the sister is jealous. Reality is reality and people do think more highly of jobs that are more challenging, competitive, and provide upward mobility. Teaching a roomful of children is much more challenging than being a nanny for a small number of charges. The ECE degree is more relevant to teaching a roomful of kids than being a nanny.
There are plenty of jobs that people enjoy which stay the same year after year. There is nothing wrong with this. You can be very happy being a nanny, working at a bookstore, or being a barista at Starbucks. Lots of people enjoy having less stressful jobs and the flexibility to move around. You do have to accept that other's will "diss" your choice but who cares. |
This. Minus the being a scientist part ![]() |
I agree with the PP's about dating. I had two guys tell me it wasn't a "real job" but when they find out I make $55k with "not a real job", they shut up. Some people just don't know how some nannies can make really good salaries. |
Working as a nanny in LA helped me buy a home, while all my friends with real jobs are struggling to pay bills and renting. I have two cars and go on two vacations per year. With overtime, I make almost $80k per year. People can diss me all they want, I love my job!! |
I'm the person with the jealous sister. I must say, reading comprehension skills are very important, and it seems you don't have any. I have a degree (actually got one a few weeks after I finished high school through an amazing program) but its not in a child related field. I was a nanny for a few years, and my charge is leaving. I've accepted a job as a teaching assistant with the option to become a full on teacher after I take me last needed class. But it's okay that you doubt she is jealous. My whole family and even her friends can see it. |
I am consistently being put down for being a nanny by dates and friends who don't realize how much I make or what my job entails. After they realize I take home 55k a year for playing and going out to lunch with some cute babies their attitude changes. Common question i get is do i have to clean? umm no, they hire a maid for that.
However, I am 26 and still working on my BA so that always gets pity looks but if they knew that I will be graduating with two BA (one in ECE and the other in Business) without every having to take out a loan (i paid everything myself, no family help) I'm sure that pity look will turn into jealously. I make more now as a nanny than most individuals with BAs my age. I just paid off my new car after only 2 yrs and just dropped 3k on my vegas vacation. If i wanted to buy a condo, i could. But sadly, I can't go on bragging about my job and awesome lifestyle to judgmental people. So i just say i'm a yoga instructor (pt job) which is surprisingly more acceptable then being a nanny. |
Nope! I use knowledge I obtained while earning my education degree DAILY as a nanny. You are absolutely clueless about the field and it is obvious. Take your negativity elsewhere. |
Not the PP but sorry you are not using your ECE degree DAILY as a nanny. I could say that I was using my culinary degree DAILY when I toast a bagel but it wouldn't be true. I could say that I was using my computer science degree if I was a Comcast repairman but it wouldn't be true. An ECE degree is used daily if you teach, do group management, develop educational materials and products, or work with special needs kids doing intervention therapy and assessment. It is not used DAILY with one or a few charges as a nanny. |
+1 |
I am not being negative. No hard feelings, dear. It is great that you are getting your education degree, but you don't need one to be the help (there is nothing wrong with being the help). |
Please f*** off with your use of "the help". It's condescending and elitist, not that you need to be told that. |
My lawyer and my doctor are my help, thanks. |
Really? So homeschooling my two charges isn't using my degree? Ok. Making lesson plans and implementing them, coming up with tasks developmentally appropriate for them, and tracking their progress IS using my degree. Sorry you're so bitter that your degrees are in culinary and computer science. ![]() |
If more nannies thought of themselves as homeschool teachers for infants and toddlers, and put in the planning time to actually provide those services, the profession would get a lot more respect. The problem is that a lot of nannies truly are just in the business of playing with kids and going to lunch with other nannies and babies. There's nothing wrong with that, but it doesn't make you a professional and that is why people look down on what you do. It's too bad, because it discourages women with degrees in ECE from working as nannies, when that path offers many benefits.
I really wish someone would start a licensure program for nanny/ECE homeschool teachers. I know there are already nanny training schools, but I'm thinking of something more on the lines of a governess training school. |
