Senior Skip Day

Anonymous
My senior is super stressed about this. She’s very into school spirit but is aggravated that they are doing it so early in the year — she’s worried she will miss a test. When I was a kid, it was always in the spring when everyone had senioritis and college decisions were in.

Exactly! It's NOT random, and if Ms. Senior AP Teacher doesn't know when it is, that says volumes about her relationships with her students.

And we wonder why teachers quit? Just look at this.

A teacher is considered crappy and accused of having poor relationships with students because she… wants to do her job well?

Ridiculous.

+1

I’m a little shock at the number slamming teachers. It’s sad. Senior skip day is stupid anyways. It is not organized. Some skip, some don’t. It’s not like the whole senior class is gone. It’s kinda lame.

Tryhard crybaby parents trying to be cool teens vicariously.

Our class did ours the day before Thanksgiving, which is such an "important" day of school that MCPS doesn't even have class that day anymore. This was about 20 years ago. My mother rightfully refused to write me a note but allowed me to stay home, to my surprise (she was usually very uptight). The teachers all knew in advance and didn't seem to care; I'm not sure exactly how many of us skipped but it was definitely a critical mass.

It's dumb but harmless, IMO, if you have an otherwise conscientious teen.

That stress is part of adulting - weighing the sides, making difficult decisions, and owning the consequences.

It’s also a good litmus test on if you have a moral compass and will do what’s right, even if it’s not popular, or if you’ll compromise your values to fit in and look like you belong.

The risk of consequences isn’t from the parents. It’s having an unexcused absence and you skipped on the day of a quiz. Will the teacher let you make it up? How much does it hurt your grade if they don’t?

Right. And honestly, the parents who endorse this crap knowingly are not doing themselves or their kids any favors.

It’s just a day of ffs it’s not rebellion, it’s not dangerous, y’all take life too seriously

It’s an unsanctioned day off. And if your kid skips to fit in and you as a parent don’t care, fine. No big deal. Just make sure to not complain and cry if they miss an assignment or quiz that day and demand that they be accommodated for a choice they made, with your blessing, to skip their obligation.

Hello 1980’s hairspray has damaged your brain cells.

NP. You really thought this was an effective comeback? The dumbing down of America may be a real phenomenon.

I am surprised so early. My senior has heard nothing about one yet, but, then again, she is a nerd. I told her that once she has a confirmed college acceptance, go for it as long as an unexcused absence doesn't tank anything.

But, what do I know. My idea of skipping was sneaking out of my last class when we had a sub and going to tcby for froyo. Also a nerd.

Yes I agree you and the other mom's sound extremely dumb. I'm sorry for whatever has happened to you, it might not have been hairspray but it was something. You all sound insane.

If teachers of seniors are a-holes.

I teach mixed grade classes (an AP elective) and use Senior Skip Day as a day when the juniors and sophomores in the class can get caught up on any missing work and/or receive individualized help with concepts they're having trouble grasping. If a student is all caught up and doesn't need any review, great. Those kids can work on assignments for other classes.

It's not a big deal.

And I teach an AP class only offered to seniors. I can’t waste a day because I have too much content that needs to be covered before exams.

If you can't figure out how to deal with one day where you won't have a majority of your students so you pop quiz them as "punishment," you're not only an a-hole, you're a crappy teacher who doesn’t know how to plan.

Call me an a-hole if you want.

Teachers have the lesson planned for weeks. Senior skip day is a random day. Teachers don’t know exactly when that day is so how can the plan. You are the a-hole.

Dedicated Teacher - thanks for all you do!

Some parents suck!

Senior Skip Day is FAR from random. All you have to do is listen to them talk. It's no secret when the day is, and it's planned at least a week in advance. If the a-hole teacher can't adjust her plans, that's on her and it makes her a crappy teacher. Does her world fall apart when there's a snow day?

DP. This makes no sense to me. Why should a teacher accommodate skipping students? I'm all for skipping in the Spring post APs and all, but skipping now seems dumb. And, no one should expect instruction to pause because students wanted to ditch school. That's some crazy sense of entitlement there.

Wrong forum. No one asked your opinion.

LOL this thread is literally asking for opinions.
