Senior Skip Day

Anonymous
My kid is a freshman and my DH is way more of a rigid rule follower than I am (and I am an educator) but I think we'd be inclined to let him skip if he is doing something to replace school (social is fine, just not sitting at home playing video games, sleeping till 12). Even sleeping till 10 and having senior brunch or something.

It’s just a skip day. There is nothing social or organized for the senior class. They are sleeping in late and playing video games or watching til tok or youtube. It’s not like they are volunteering at a shelter or doing something or good for society. They just skip school and act like they are living on the edge. Rebellious.

I would let my kid skip if he wants to, but I won't lie and write a note saying he is sick. I feel like it is a fun rebellion/reward, but even with fun rebellions there may be consequences. Probably not, and it will be a day where he had fun with friends and has an unexcused absent on his high school record. Really not a big deal unless he has too many unexcused absences already or misses a test. But that will be his decision to weigh. But I don't want to convey a lesson of "just lie to get out of consequences or have other people lie for you." So I won't send in a note saying he is sick. Maybe a note saying he was doing something for his social health!

Maybe a note saying he was doing something for his social health?

That’s lying, honey. He’s not doing it for his social health, he’s doing because everyone else is doing it. He’s a sheep.

Yes - I was kidding on the social health note. There will be no note.

What date are you hearing it will happen?

For my first kid, I think there was sometime the week before ED applications were due. So kids skipped en masse to finish up their applications. (Hardly a rebellion...)

Skipping to do this would actually be responsible and I would write a note.

At our HS it was supposedly last Friday. Don’t know how many actually skipped.

This year the quarter end on 10/31 and 11/1 is a day off for kids. Seniors have no reason to skip this year.

That’s right. Many seniors at our HS have skipped the “Safety Day” last month and will skip the PSAT day.

Though to be fair, I don't think a helicopter mom who wants to write a note for Senior Skip Day is knowingly letting her kid have sex on prom night...then again, maybe she'll be ok with it as long as he does the do at her house and not a hotel room or the back of his car.

Except those kids aren’t seniors. They’re third year ninth-graders.
