Confusion about Oakton pyramid feeder patterns

FCPS says split feeders are bad and should be limited.

OES parents don’t want to send their kids to Jackson for GenEd with icky Falls Church kids.

So FCPS makes TMS a three-way split feeder to Madison, Oakton, and Marshall HS.

And AAP parents still get choice of Jackson and Thoreau.

The boundary change wasn’t specific to OES. Four schools were affected, because of the increased capacity at Thoreau after the renovation. Talk about hypocrisy, how many complaints have I seen about overcrowding and/or sending kids to a school farther away when there is one closer they drive right past yet when FCPS actually addresses that (because TMS had more space and was a lot closer than LJMS for these kids), people find something else to complain about.

All the schools affected were schools that had fed into Jackson and then Oakton.

No one in those areas was driving past Thoreau on their way to Jackson.

Turned Thoreau into a three-way split feeder and Jackson into a majority FARMS school.

From Thoreau MS most kids go to Madison HS. Second most go to Oakton HS. Relatively few go to Marshall HS. Kids are sad to be splitting up from their friends, but I like to believe that they are enriched by making new friends.

It may not anymore but it uses to. Until several years ago, OES was a split feeder to both Jackson and Thoreau as were a couple of other schools (Mosby Woods was one I can remember). Then those 3 or 4 schools were redistricted so all of the kids went to Thoreau as their base after the renovation increased capacity there. Most (if not all, I don’t remember) of the former OES Jackson kids went on to OHS while the Thoreau kids went to Madison. Now the only kids OES at Jackson who go to OHS are AAP kids who chose the center.

Noting that Mosby Woods has been renamed Mosaic.

The majority of Luther Jackson MS does go to Falls Church HS.

Ok, now I am really confused. Also are you talking about Oakton ES or Oakton High?

Oakton High. You can look at Franklin boundary and see--I think Navy and Waples Mill--but Waples Mill may be split.

The thread is about where OES (Oakton Elem School) students go for middle school though. They go either to Thoreau or Luther Jackson.

But they only go to Jackson for AAP. They can turn it down and go to Thoreau.

So if you go to Kilmer and then Madison most kids will already know each other from Thoreau.

If you go to Thoreau and then Marshall most kids will already know each other from Kilmer.

If you go to Thoreau and then Oakton, there will be a lot more kids who already know each other from Carson and Franklin.

It’s OK if you want a fresh start.

OP:
I'm considering buying a house in the Oakton HS pyramid but the feeder patterns are confusing and making me wary. I'm particularly interested in Crossfield ES and Oakton ES (but am also open to other suggestions). I'm wondering about people's experiences sending their kids to Oakton ES and then Jackson Middle? All OES kids zoned to OHS go to Jackson, right? And if DC gets into AAP what middle school would that be?

OP asked about Crossfield, as well--which is Carson and said she was "open" to other options. Franklin has sent kids to Oakton for many, many years.

Someone chimed in and said Oakton kids go to Franklin or Carson. They were talking about Oakton High School kids, which are not Oakton Elementary School kids.

Go read the first post in this thread. Crossfield was mentioned and OP was talking about Oakton High School pyramid. Crossfield goes to Oakton High (most of Crossfield) and a good number of Oakton High students go to Franklin. I did not "chime in." I answered a question.

You didn’t answer the right question. I suggest you read it again. You’re awfully defensive. OP said I’m particularly interested in kids who attend Oakton Elementary School - what middle school would they go to?

Saying that Oakton High School kids come from Franklin or Carson has nothing to do with where Oakton Elementary School kids go to middle school.

To the PP:

This is OP’s main question. Where do Oakton ES kids go for middle school? And it was answered. They either go to Thoreau or can choose Jackson for the AAP center.

Chiming in that Oakton HS kids come from Franklin or Carson is irrelevant.

"nuff" said. Mentioning Carson (where Crossfield kids go) is not irrelevant.

Reading comprehension, my friend. The PP didn’t actually answer in her post where Crossfield ES kids go. The poster simply said Oakton kids go to Franklin or Carson. And then clarified to mean Oakton HS. Which isn’t relevant. OP asked about Oakton ES.

Oakton High.

Here. PP talked about Oakton High which wasn’t what OP asked about. OP asked in particular about Oakton ES. And maybe was slightly interested in Crossfield ES. Either way, PP, you brought up information clearly about Oakton HS which wasn’t asked about.
