| Would love to hear thoughts. My DC is a girl if that matters. |
| Three totally different schools. What major? |
Engineering or business. |
|
Lehigh is a smaller school not well known for engineering (ranked #85). Located in a small town in Pennsylvania. 7,000 students. Private school with tuition of $57,000/year
Carnegie Mellon has well known and respected engineering program (ranked #7). Located in Pittsburgh. 14,000 students. Known as a meat grinder for engineering students. Private school with tuition of $62,000/year. Purdue is a large university well known for engineering (ranked #9). Located in a midwestern town in Indiana. 40,000 students known for being in the BIG TEN sports conference and has strong university support for football and basketball games. Public school with instate tuition $9,950/year. OOS $29,000/year. |
CMU is a really intense place for engineering and CS. It’s not really known as a happy school. It’s full on 24/7. Pittsburgh is a nice city so there’s that. And CMU grads do get the good jobs. But it’s a long four years. Purdue is more sane. And it’s great for engineering. Think they’ve produced more astronauts than any other school. But it’s in Indiana. Not the most beautiful campus. It’s got a good vibe though. Strong sense of community. Academically you’d be fine at either. CMU will have more prestige but Purdue more than holds its own. And in engineering it doesn’t matter that much where you went to school, only what you did I don’t know anything about Lehigh |
| CMU has the best engineering and business programs of the three, and Purdue is not far behind in engineering. |
I have seen a bunch of responses on this board like this that sound like ChatGPT wrote it. |
| Whoever said Lehigh isn’t known for engineering is full of shit. That’s exactly what it’s known for. It’s not MIT or even Purdue but it’s a good engineering school. Jesus. |
| It is also wrong. Lehigh is ranked 51 in national universities and 45 in undergrad engineering. And their athletic teams used to be called the Engineers bc the6 are known for that. |
Based on that logic, then Dartmouth, ND, Vandy, and Dayton are also “known for engineering”. |
|
CMU is very intense academically. Agree with the assessment that it’s a meat grinder. The students as a whole are very academically inclined. Probably harder to find kids who want a balanced social life. Pittsburgh is a great city for college.
Lehigh is in the middle of nowhere but it’s pretty. Greek life is huge there and those who do it love it. DD has a friend who transferred out in part because she wasn’t into partying and couldn’t find her people. |
Well, they are. |
Well, those are all very good schools for engineering. Not sure what the point is. Lehigh just isn't very well known generally. |
Of the 3, Lehigh is best known on Wall Street if that's important to you. |
Engineering at Lehigh is no picnic. Professors pride themselves on grading on a curve, so kids who were A students in HS end up with Ds. My Lehigh alumna friends sent their kids to Purdue, Bucknell, and U of Florida. |
