Carnegie Mellon v. Lehigh v. Purdue

Agreed, and I agree that the previous response sounds like ChatGPT.

Lehigh is VERY good, but there are some real Lehigh haters here on DCUM.

Purdue requires the SAT and the other two are test optional if that difference matters to you.

Disagree. Both Purdue & Indiana are outstanding for undergraduate business majors.

I do not think that there are haters of Lehigh on DCUM; posters are just aware that 5,000 student Lehigh has a very strong campusculture that may or may not appeal to one. Larger universities have a wide variety of cultures on campus so it is easier for a large cross-section of personalities & interests to find their people.

Carnegie Mellon is located in Pittsburgh with strong programs in in both business and engineering. In my opinion, CMU is more prestigious than either Lehigh or Perdue but is also made up of a lot of arrogant kids. The feeling is palpable on the tours of each school. Lehigh is much less snotty, imho. Perdue, I don't know anything about other than it is a big state school with a strong engineering program. A consideration is the size and location. It can be a bummer to be in a class with 300 other students.

Bro, when you call the school “Perdue” over and over again and confuse it with the chicken people you lose all credibility.

Agree, but we should let it slide as that poster probably went to Dook.

Clearly not a Midwesterner.

+1

No one from the state of Indiana goes to Purdue for business.

Three good choices but I agree they are very different. All have excellent engineering schools, although CMU and Purdue are stronger than Lehigh with better name recognition.

I'd go with CMU or Lehigh if she's leaning more towards the business side of things than engineering.

Purdue if she prefers a big school environment with big-name sports teams.

Lehigh if Greek life is a high priority.

CMU if she prefers a more urban environment.

Purdue if cost and bang for the buck are a top consideration.

Lehigh if she prefers a (somewhat) smaller school.

Purdue for a friendlier, less pretentious student body ("Midwest nice" is real).

CMU if ratings and prestige are the top consideration.

My son was waitlisted at CMU. The campus is small. He has friends there, its not super social because it's very intense. The kids are busy studying. We visited, the campus is urban and compact.

He attends Purdue, loves it. The work is also tough and demanding but he is also involved in many clubs and social events. The midwest vibe is very awesome. Purdue has a sprawling campus that is very attractive but remote - hour or two from major cities, but who cares, there are 45000 kids your own age on campus so its not like they are looking for fine dining and theatre opportunities. Fun sports culture.

The years fly by and the "nearby" cities are meaningless. Purdue has a national and world wide engineering rep, and is a heck of a value.

So choose on your budget tolerance and whether you like big or small schools. Also admissions might choose for you.

Know nothing on Lehigh.

This. Even in 2000, I never felt isolated.

My brother went to Purdue. Aerospace Engineer. It's a great school and I am happy to see the Love it has been getting lately. I had many classmates from school who attended Purdue and loved it. Last week, I took my dog to a Vet who had his degree from Purdue. He made the Midwestern Nice comment.. as in "I couldn't believe how really nice everyone was out there. I came from New Jersey..completely different!"

I looked at the College Destinations of Thomas Jefferson Science and Technology High School in VA. Pleased to see many are heading to Purdue.

I don't know anything about Lehigh, other than it is likely pricey. I assume CMU would be as well.

+1 yes, they are. Both are good. Krannert school of management is well respected.

For what it's worth, Lehigh's sports teams were actually called "The Engineers" until the mid-90s. While I'm not arguing that it is more prestigious than CMU, it is certainly, historically, focused on engineering.

We visited CMU because DD is big into musical theater and we just wanted to see the school.

Many, many Asians who seemed to be speaking their languages with the same. I think I read the Asian population is above 50 percent? Seemed very intense.

Have heard that the liberal arts folks/musical theater/music people don't mingle much with the STEM folks..
