Subject: Why is UMich so overrated?
Meh, I'll feed the trolls . . . .
Assuming I neither had "FU" levels of money nor were destitute enough to reap loads of need-based aid, Michigan is
- a good enough school that if I were in state, I would think very hard about attending any other school except for HYPS or (if I wanted to go somewhere smaller) Williams, Amherst, or Pomona.
- an ordinary enough school that if I were in state in California, Virginia, North Carolina, Wisconsin, Illinois, Washington, or Texas, I would consider it crazy to pay OOS tuition at Michigan rather than attending my in-state flagship.
Both of these things are true.
I'll also add that
- the U of M alumni amongst my friends and relatives are brilliant and definitely on par with my friends and relatives who went to elite private schools.
- I also live in a major metropolitan area that seems to be a dumping ground for the bottom 75% or so of Michigan grads. They are the Dunning-Kruger effect personified and serve as walking advertisements against the schools. Harvard, it ain't.
One final note for younger readers: Much of Michigan's cachet is rooted in the fact that during the years of Jewish quotas at many elite, historically Protestant schools, Michigan and the University of Chicago were two universities that bucked that trend. As such, they became destination schools for affluent Jews from major cities. This ultimately helped Michigan's brand, especially in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
