Why does Michigan get such negative comments from posters here?

Anonymous
I've been reading a lot of these threads and for whatever reason there's always 2-3 people bashing Michigan. How is this school deserving of more negative, snarky comments than other schools?

It’s a great flagship state school. Nobody denies that.

But people on this site think it is on the same level as an Ivy or SLAC or Stanford ... which is bash worthy.

Obnoxious alums.

Many put UVA on par with an Ivy/SLAC/Stanford but it doesn't get the same level of bashing, which is odd

I was a little snotty about Michigan until my kid went there. Now I wish I’d gone there (and I went to an Ivy). It was a pretty amazing education and experience for DC. And through Michigan alum connections DC got a great job.

I didn’t love the college my other DC attended so it’s not just that I’m trying to boost my kids school. I really didn’t know that much about UMich until my kid went there. So I assume people who bash it just aren’t up to date on the university.

That’s just stupidity. At least, with UM, I can understand. Sort of...

Yes it does. I almost posted they are like UVA.. delusional.

OP - Be glad some DCUMs look down on it! If you’re an alum, grow a thick skin, and wear it as a badge of honor. Better if the riff-raff stay away.

Michigan grad here. It is one of the best state schools in every respect. Usually ranked with Berkeley and UCLA. On a graduate school level, many programs rank with Ivy League departments.

OK, we all know this, right? But it is not an Ivy League school. And it's not supposed to be. I don't have a problem with that. But Michigan also attracts a lot of Ivy League rejects. And my theory is those people like to say it is as good as an Ivy League as a way to soothe their feelings. My comment to them is, accept Michigan for what it is and be glad you received an excellent education (if you worked for it) in one of the great college towns around.

b/c Michigan is a 3rd tier safety school for rich snobs. The school has no value and deserves to be bashed.

It is on the same level. Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant and probably has no experience with academia. And no — I didn’t go to Michigan.

Because it's where obnoxious full-pay trash from Jersey and Long Island go instead of Rutgers or GW. See Uber Jake bullying his Ann Arbor uber driver:

Students at University of Michigan caught harassing uber driver (note: Jake's dad went to prison for 1yr and is known as the "worst landlord in NYC") https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/03/nyregion/steven-croman-landlord-sentenced-rikers.html

Oh yeah, because you couldn’t find that about every damn college out there.

Michigan has over 30,000 undergrads -- 50% are out of state. So there's not just a few "Uber Jake" douchebags, there are several thousand running around, plus thousands of their obnoxious loudmouth female counterparts.
