Take music in grade 8. Take FOCS in summer school if your kid isn’t super organized or generally on top of work. Otherwise AP CS in 9th is fine without any previous work.

Oldest took in middle school - second took in AP in high school - I wish I would have waited and done in High School as it is another AP credit. My first took in middle school as I said so then did not take again in high school. Just moved on to programming

A lot of students take AP CSP as their first CS class. It's not necessary to take FOCS first.
