Lack of refs, good young competent and fit refs. It’s terrible to see a poor old man barely Abel to leave the center of the field
I know you’ll bring up verbal abuse from coaches and parents as the catalyst for the shortage of refs and young refs obviously can’t take that kind of abuse. Is there any way that doesn’t involve money to Acrually fix this problem?? |
For starters you can sign up and red yourself. Let me guess, you have criticized all the volunteer coaches your kids have ever had too but never stepped up yourself. Same with your paid coaches. |
That, and educating parents and coaches. I have to admit I had the occasional dissent as a coach — nothing card-worthy but still things that I regret. I think one reason I became a ref was to do some penance. I’ll try to leave the center circle tomorrow. (Actually, I keep a relatively light schedule so that I can run with the action.) |

Sure, because there's lots of young people lining up to be screamed at by parents, coaches and players, run several miles, told they need to wear glasses, told they suck, on a steaming hot afternoon, or in the rain, all for $40 bucks, or whatever the amount is. Until parents, players and coaches behave themselves appropriately, this is not likely to improve.

I think money probably does have to be part of it. Refs should be taking their job seriously, because setting aside winning and losing, kids get hurt when they don’t. I watched a game yesterday where one team flagrantly tripped the other, body checked like it was a hockey game, and stomped on a goalie when he was on the ground with the ball in his possession. Not a single penalty called on any of it, which meant that team’s behavior only got worse as the game went on. Two kids from the opposing team, including the goalie, were knocked out of the game with injuries in the first half, but the refs simply did not care.
We need better people than that on the field. If we have to pay more to get them, so be it. |
You’re part of the problem. |
| I'm a referee and there is a massive referee shortage especially around tournament time. Cannon Cup is in desperate need of refs for example. I have time, but I have no desire to go and have parents scream like lunatics at me asking for a card for every foul. Screaming for a handball every time the ball touches a hand/arm. It's just not worth my time. I watched a U14 boys game yesterday. The parents just would not stop screaming at the referees no matter what they did. The center probably got $35-$40 for that game. And I'm one of many refs who just avoid certain games, teams, clubs, tournaments, etc. You couldn't pay me enough to center some games. So you get what ou get. |

Sure.
If soccer programs made it clear to the parents that yelling at the refs is unacceptable, and actually enforced it by benching kids if the parents are loud, that would be a big boost. I’ve reffed with a lot of younger refs, and they’re always shocked by the parents behavior. Coaches, everyone expects and can deal with. Parents, frankly, are the ones that really scare the young refs off. And sure, more money certainly wouldn’t hurt. And for people complaining about “center circle refs”…yes, it’s not ideal, but don’t forget that the ref may be on his fourth or fifth game of the day, especially if it’s a tournament. |
Well, don’t be shy! Spill that tea. What clubs and tournaments do you avoid? |
| My ds will only ref rec games after dealing with travel parents for one season. |
| Trying to get DS AND myself into a reffing class and it appears the boat has left the slip for the year... I would have thought summer would be a good time to get the training out of the way in prep to Ref next fall. No such luck. I keep hearing about shortages but getting the training is not easy from what I can see. |
You should be able to do the online portion of the certification now, and the in field portion should be scheduled soon. |

My DS refs and I told him when he asked to ref that he needed a thick skin. Most parents THINK they know the game, yell incessantly at the red as stated above for things they think are fouls. Just painful to watch.
You want better referees, grow up and let your kids play and SHUT UP. Stop yelling at the referees. A parent actually walked into the field at a game yesterday and started yelling at the other team. What is wrong with people. Those were young kids, U9 I think. You want better refs, check your own behavior first. Cheer for your team, not your own kid. Let the coaches coach. I mean, people pay thousands for travel and travel coaches then proceed to think they know better. Seriously! |
This. So much this. |
How do? Because I think we should pay refs more to encourage good refs to stay with it? |
