Please share your system for managing glove/hat/scarf storage. My kids are now 13 and 16, and after all these years I still don't have this down. We have a mudroom, and we've tried all sorts of baskets, hooks, etc on walls, on shelves, you name it. And yet every fall and winter we are vexed by this same problem. If anyone has figured this out and is willing to share the wisdom, I would love suggestions. |
We have a basket for each item. All the gloves in one, hats in another...it sounds like you tried this already though. What was it that didn’t work for you? |
Thanks! I've not separated them by item type -that's a good idea. Have always tried to have one basket per person, instead of per item. I'm not exactly sure what doesn't work -just seems like we are all always rifling through a bin/basket/bag for something --end up using just the stuff on the top that we can see most easily. Current system works well enough - some hanging baskets on the wall at eye level. Just thought I would tap the collective wisdom here after years of reinventions with limited success. |
My solution, apparently, was to have boys who refuse to wear such things. Problem solved. |
Reduce the number of things each person has out. Why have more than 2 or 3 gloves, 2 hats, 2 scarves in the bin? If you want to keep more for whatever reason leave the rest in the closet or something and just rotate as desired. If your gloves have those little clips to attach them to one another, use them! We also started use zip lock easy slide bags to keep pairs together.

We don’t have a mudroom so we have a hanging shoe holder on the back of the coat closet door. It has large pockets for hats, gloves, masks, etc. A mudroom sounds like a dream! |
It sounds like you have too much stuff. Change the items in each person’s bin seasonally so they have less to rifle through. Maybe once every two weeks have them go through to remove items that got dumped in there but don’t actually belong. |
We have a small 3-drawer dresser in the mudroom that doubles as a drop zone for keys, DH's wallet, etc. |
We have one basket for all of it. We don't have space for separate baskets. The gloves go into the hats that I sort of fold to avoid it falling out. Scarfes are folded and kept next to it. We keep one extra set of gloves and hats in the car also. If you have space, then try a different basket for each person, I personally find that more helpful. |
we have sweater storage system hanging up in the hallway closet and we sort by item - all hats go in one, gloves in another, etc - something like this - https://www.target.com/p/6-shelf-hanging-fabric-storage-organizer-light-gray-made-by-design-8482/-/A-53170296?ref=tgt_adv_XS000000&AFID=google_pla_df&fndsrc=tgtao&DFA=71700000014779327&CPNG=PLA_Storage%2BOrganization%2BShopping_Brand&adgroup=SC_Storage%2BOrganization&LID=700000001170770pgs&LNM=PRODUCT_GROUP&network=g&device=c&location=9061285&targetid=pla-791049823643&ds_rl=1246978&ds_rl=1247068&ds_rl=1248099&gclid=CjwKCAiA65iBBhB-EiwAW253W-5SlkxHtXHYv-qmQ3ZuNYYo4VnGH_zHYGhWPOOzMotptzWFGtOXAhoCN9sQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds |
forgot to add - and i have these boxes in there for gloves so they don't fall out. Hats seem okay. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/skubb-box-set-of-6-white-00428568/?gclid=CjwKCAiA65iBBhB-EiwAW253W_-NyFj5EfZOtCV1aWlrbdtljkZgoUOgALlnet0-Uf7wOq_UuWolABoCXhcQAvD_BwE |
We also have one of these. What's in it changes by season. Right now the top cubby is full of face masks (adult on one side, kids on the other), then one with kids hats and gloves. I tend to shove their gloves inside their hats so it's one unit we just grab as we walk out the door. The next cubby down is sweatshirts or puffer coats they shove in at their level, then one has their snowpants, the bottom one has a pair of my DH's shoes. In the summer it becomes baseball hats, lighter layers, and sandals galore. Thought we do have another basket for the kid's shoes to go in, we still seem to always have more shoes on the floor. |
Do you have a coat closet? I just bought this this year and it has worked really well.

Cheapo solution:
Pick up an empty box from wine at your local liquorstore. Put on shelf in closet. Pair of gloves or mittens or a hat per section, scarves for us on hooks on the back of the door. |
We use a hanging shoe organizer on the back of the coat closet door. |
