DD, 3, started half day school Monday and woke up with a tiny fever (100.4) this morning. Kept her home from school, monitored temp (up to 101.2) and gave Tylenol. She had a doctors appointment this afternoon and her temp was back to 98 then. Doctor said she did not need a Covid test since her only other symptom is a runny nose it’s most likely a cold, but if fever returns we should get tested. Her fever has stayed down since the appointment and aside from some sneezing is acting completely normal. Before anyone asks, we notified the school and she won’t go back to school until 48 hours completely symptom free and has her doctor sign off.
I have a slight scratch in my throat and possibly sore lymph nodes, husband is fine and neither of us have a fever. So how to I keep myself sane? Is this what it’s going to be like all fall/winter? |
Did she get sick at all last year? |
Just go get a covid test. I got one 2 days ago (in preparation for travel) and it was easy peasy. Results in less than 48 hours. They just wiggle a swab in your nose and it tickles a little. |
She did. Because this is the first time she’s really been around people in months I’m not surprised she came home with a cold this week. Her school started in person about a month ago but wen wanted to wait a bit before sending her. To the posted who suggested we get a test....for her or us? |
If you have some anxiety/difficulty in getting the kid a COVID test, I'd just get one for yourself. If you have the same symptoms as your kid and you don't have it, it's almost certain the kid doesn't either. It's really easy - there are walk-up sites all over DC, or you can have a Labcorp at-home test overnighted to you, mail it back, and get your results in 24-48 hours. Not 100% foolproof but should give you some piece of mind. |
Test. Isolate while you get results, and if positive, the rest of the household must test as well (unless you want to test everyone in one fell swoop) and continue to isolate for a week. |
I had a cold a few weeks ago and went and got a Covid test... except it didn't "tickle a little" it actually burned and hurt like hell. Despite hearing horror stories about the test, I thought it would be NBD.
I'll get another test if I get another cold but will try to find one that doesn't "tickle" my brain. ![]() |
Yeah, the kids ones are gentler. I can commiserate, had this experience this summer and sent me into a tailspin. You’re not alone! Can’t quite expect how freaked out you’ll get until it’s actually your sick kid. |
The ones they do in DC at the fire stations are just short swabs a few centimeters in your nostril. Nbd. |
It's almost certainly nothing!
But if you are genuinely concerned, get a test to ease your mind. My son had to get tested for surgery and they barely stuck the little q-tip thing up his nose. |
This happened to my children and I. I figured there was no point of a test tbh. We didn’t need medical care so we just self isolated for two weeks after our symptoms went away. All together it was like 3.5 weeks. It’s probably a cold, possibly even covid. But for me, since we didn’t require medical care, it wasn’t worth taking my sick kid out of the house for a test. 100.4 is a totally acceptable fever for a toddler and I probably wouldn’t even give any medicine to reduce it unless they were completely miserable. |
Our 2.5 yr old started school at the beginning of the month and on week 2 our 14 month old spiked a fever of over 102. I knew our toddler wouldnt be able to go to school with a sick family member and didnt want her to have to miss school for a week just bc her sister had what was likely one of the 20-30 colds they predict children get every year..... We took the 14 month old for a rapid test at medstar and she was negative. I cared for her at home and the toddler's day-to-day wasnt impacted and she never got sick. I think this will happen frequently until the spring and our goal is to keep the toddler safely in school (as long as COVID is negative and toddler isnt symptomatic). And YES we told the school what was happening. |
Why are you being a jerk? Get the kid tested please. |
Which medstar? |
OP here. I don’t think I am? We took her to her doctor 4 hours after we took her temperature the first time. Following her doctors advice we are not testing her unless her temperature goes back up. It’s been below 100 all day. But thank you, internet stranger, for calling me a jerk for following her doctors plan. |
