Toddler has a cold...how do I not panic about this?

The doctor should have ordered a test. One reason we still can’t get a handle on this thing is because they are still effectively rationing tests. We know that smaller children are less likely to,have what were the original “classic” symptoms, and we know that many people are carrying this thing around without spiking a fever or having a cough. Schools are contagion vectors. What is it we think is flying around that’s not covid? If we’re protecting against covid, many other bugs shouldn’t have a chance.

Your doctor is an idiot.

I think you go wih you gut, OP.
This fall/winter is going to be rough, but if your spidey sense is telling you something is wrong, press the issue with her doctor or another one.

We got our youngest DD tested a few weeks ago, out of an abundance of caution (she's in daycare), and it was just a quick, shallow nasal swab, not the deep swab. She did fine with it, and she's just a baby. Test was negative, and none of the rest of us ever had any symptoms, so likely just a cold, as our pediatrician suspected. Other illnesses are still circulating, but symptoms overlap so much, especially in young children!

OP here. I don’t think I am? We took her to her doctor 4 hours after we took her temperature the first time. Following her doctors advice we are not testing her unless her temperature goes back up. It’s been below 100 all day.

But thank you, internet stranger, for calling me a jerk for following her doctors plan.

your doctor’s plan isn’t taking into account the broader situation. stay home and get tests.

Your doctor is failing to follow cdc guidelines

Not to hijack OPs thread. But our middle child (3) who is in preschool woke up with a runny nose. No fever. Are we supposed to get him tested?

They are rationing tests because they have to. It’s as simple as that. Ideally we would all be testing more frequently.

OP it’s likely just a cold. Look at it this way - for most kids covid symptoms are very similar to cold and flu symptoms. So if your kid ends up having covid and the symptoms are mild then it really isn’t that different from any other illness. If you have mild symptoms then again it isn’t that different from any other illness. The issue here is is the unlikely chance your kid has covid and can spread it to others. I say unlikely cuz covid rates are low. Just follow your doctors instructions and test if the fever comes back. Isolate in the meantime.
