Students at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts want some of their tuition money back because they say virtual classes aren't what they paid for — but instead of addressing the situation, the school's dean sent them a video of herself dancing to REM's "Losing My Religion." Following several communications between students and the school administration, Dean Allyson Green earlier this week attached her dance video to an email to students in which she explained that she doesn't have the authority to refund tuition and that it's "challenging" for the school to give students their money back right now. The video is now making the rounds on social media after NYU Tisch senior Michael Price, 21, shared it on Twitter. Here is the video: https://mobile.twitter.com/michale_price/status/1241939725121921025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1241939725121921025&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.city-data.com%2Fforum%2Fcolleges-universities%2F3140770-nyu-arts-college-students-demand-tuition.html While I am generally against tuition refunds (or partial tuition refunds) in these times where schools are offering online instruction, I think these and other art students have a point for their tuition. While most at expensive schools can legitimately claim that they would not have paid what they are paying for online online instruction, these are unusual times and the method of instruction doesn't really change what is being imparted on the bulk of students. That is not the case for many students of the arts, where studio time and access is a huge of their education and training. You can't get that via online instruction. Note, boarding fees should be refunded in part or in full, which they are generally I think, if students have to move off campus, as should meal plans. But that's another conversation. |
Really weird. She must be mortified. |
If we had to make a list of profoundly weird people in academia, it would be miles long. |
This silly professor may be dancing, but sounds as if the students are whistling Dixie. |
Cool Gen X Dean. A bit flaky but think she was saying I’m right there with you and losing my religion. That’s me in the corner. Bet I danced near her at Poseurs or Tracks, same moves. |
Hmm... still better than the Kennedy Center receiving $25M in federal aid and them firing all its musicians... |
LOVED IT. I understand. She does not have the authority to return the money. I think she would if she could. She is frustrated for her students. She gets it. She is right there with the students and she is heartsick for them but she is in a corner and she is losing her religion. C L A S S I C And since it is an Art College, I would have expected some creative response and this was one. I love it Dean! We all are losing our religion, aren't we? |
The response was tone deaf. The dean is pretty flaky so I am not surprised
DC is a sophomore at Tisch in film. This semester is Sight and Sound, and the major project is a 30 minute film to be filmed in Tisch's studios so you learn how to work in a studio. Distance learning does not work for this project, and since this is the last major film project in the film program, we should get a refund. This is on top of students being told that they had 7 days to move everything out of the dorm, and if you could not make it back, don't worry, NYU would pack up your stuff and send it to you. Then, after the 7 days passed, students were told the stuff left in the rooms could not be sent back but would be moved around, and sent at some later time. I am glad I made the trip into NYC and packed up, but I bet those kids who live too far away to come back will never see their stuff again. And who would want it, after they fill the dorms with hospital overflow patients (the plans for the dorms). Supposedly the dorm refund checks are being put in the mail today. I am not holding my breath. |
she is awesome. |
Good dancer. I like her. |
I urge everyone to pause and try to imagine the stress of being in Manhattan right now. We are expected normal behavior from people who are being stressed in a way we can't understand (and hopefully won't in the DC area, but who knows).
My family is in NYC and I am having trouble focusing for an entire work day because I'm beside myself with worry about their safety. My older relatives aren't exactly calm and rational right now and I am not expecting them to be. |
That's pretty tacky. Not to mention the fact that she'll probably get the university sued if she didn't license the music (which she almost certainly did not). |
Real scandal is her dancing sucks. |
I would challenge you to find an NYU student who thinks this lmao |
to 12:35 -- We got the NYU dorm refund over the weekend in the form of a deduction in the amount of the final payment due on E-Suite. The amount was slightly less than 50% of the semester's dorm cost. A paper refund check may take longer. I was amazed they were able to do this so quickly given everything that is going on. |
