https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/nyu-tischs-students-want-tuition-fee-back-amid-coronavirus-shutdown-dean-responds-with-dance-video/2346626/ - Students at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts want some of their tuition money back because they say virtual classes aren't what they paid for — but instead of addressing the situation, the school's dean sent them a video of herself dancing to REM's "Losing My Religion." Following several communications between students and the school administration, Dean Allyson Green earlier this week attached her dance video to an email to students in which she explained that she doesn't have the authority to refund tuition and that it's "challenging" for the school to give students their money back right now. The video is now making the rounds on social media after NYU Tisch senior Michael Price, 21, shared it on Twitter. Here is the video: https://mobile.twitter.com/michale_price/status/1241939725121921025?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1241939725121921025&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.city-data.com%2Fforum%2Fcolleges-universities%2F3140770-nyu-arts-college-students-demand-tuition.html While I am generally against tuition refunds (or partial tuition refunds) in these times where schools are offering online instruction, I think these and other art students have a point for their tuition. While most at expensive schools can legitimately claim that they would not have paid what they are paying for online online instruction, these are unusual times and the method of instruction doesn't really change what is being imparted on the bulk of students. That is not the case for many students of the arts, where studio time and access is a huge of their education and training. You can't get that via online instruction. Note, boarding fees should be refunded in part or in full, which they are generally I think, if students have to move off campus, as should meal plans. But that's another conversation.
