What skill have you picked up after 50?

Looking for inspiration that my brain and body are not hopeless. There are so many things I wish I had tried when I was younger and wonder if it's too late.

I kayaked for the first time last year, and learned tai chi (Yang form). I’m taking golf lessons. I learned how to play mah jong over the winter. Next up is sailing lessons.

I’m 54.

I also learned to kayak.

I just took a Community Emergency Response Team training class (32 hours), that teaches you how to help, as a citizen, during a mass casualty or other disaster. It taught triage, higher level first aid, fire suppression, mass shooter exercises, etc. The best part of it was a heightened situational awareness, IMO. The classes are free. Google your jurisdiction if you are interested. I took it in montgomery county. http://www.montgomerycert.org

I'm going to take a wilderness survival class next.

And I've signed up for a GIS (geographic information system) certificate at Montgomery College. That will actually be useful for my job.

And I am learning Spanish on the Duolingo app. I am in a "race" with my son, who's taking Spanish in school.

Can I suggest something new to learn over 50, especially for people who learned or are interested in kayaking - try rowing! There are multiple learn to row programs in the area, it’s fabulous exercise, gets you out in nature, and makes you feel like a bad ass. I picked it back up mid forties after 30 years off the water.

I went to cosmetology school at 52. I had retired early (worked a Fed job and left as soon as I had my 25 years in) and was ready for something fun. It was so much fun to be around young people, hear them chat about their lives, learn new trends, etc etc. It also brought me closer to my children (ages 16-21) because I kinda learned things about the younger generations I would have not known if I hadn't spent that time with them. Loved it. I work 2 nights a week and one Saturday morning a week and its perfect.

I referee high school and youth lacrosse. Never played the game, but the paid exercise program rocks. Actually helps me practice "verbal judo" with coaches as well. Increases revenue, makes me fitter and I feel better about getting better as a ref. Find something with multiple benefits and it will stick
