going home from hospital sans car -- carseat issues?

How do you know? Are you familiar with the policy or basing it off of experience? Asking b/c if you were using a car, then different rules might apply.

for those times that you need to take a trip in someone else's car you could rent a carseat

this would be such a PITA to rent (?!?! where do you rent a carseat anyway, and how would you know it would be safe? ) every time you needed to take a trip in a friend's car that it would be easier just to buy a darn carseat. even if you don't have a car, it's useful to have. the OP seems to be assuming that there are people in the world who not only don't have a car but who never ride in cars, period, which I think is a bit of a stretch.

and yes, sibley requires you to carry the baby out of the hospital strapped into a carseat.

How do you know? I don't believe that if you are walking across the street to your home they can legally require a carseat. I'm playing devil's advocate a bit, yes, we have a car and a carseat, but there are plenty of parents who do not. I lived in DC for 7 years and never had a car and took taxis a handful of times at best. With so many people electing to reduce the carbon footprint, I'd imagine there are increasing numbers of individuals who simply do not drive or ride in cars frequently enough to merit use of a carseat. When you rent a car for a trip, you may rent a carseat, btw for the person saying it would be a PITA. In any case, I'm not arguing about whether or not it is a PITA or not -- I suppose that would be for the parents to decide based on their own priorities, which may not be the same as yours. Still, bottom line, if baby is going to be going home in a stroller or in mom / dads arms, via walking or metro, I am wondering if a carseat may be legally required.

For those of you saying Sibley requires this, how do you know?

I'm interested in the answer to this question. My guess, but don't really know, is that this comes up so infrequently at a place like Sibley that if it is indeed their "policy" that you have to have a carseat they probably relax that if you actually discribe your situation. But, don't know. I would imagine in NYC there would be many people who would fit the OPs scenario.

According to the Welcome Packet on GW's website, "You must have a car seat in order to be discharged by car" and "By law an installed infant car seat is required for discharge if traveling home by car." So obviously, if you don't have a car, you don't need a car seat. I can't imagine why it would be different at any other hospital.

12:29 here. I know because I was informed of Sibley's carseat policy AD NAUSEUM by their staff members. I must have heard it 10 times, how I had to have a carseat and I had to carry the baby out of the hospital strapped into the carseat, and carseat carried on my lap in the wheelchair.

If you're one of the 15 residents that happens to live right across the street from Sibley, by all means fight this policy. For the remaining zillions of new moms who don't ... YOU NEED A FRIGGIN CARSEAT. Even if you don't have a car. It's just safer to carry a baby in a carseat if you're EVER going to be in a car, and yes, that includes a cab.

I called and asked.

OP again -- I know, I'm sorry I think I'm starting to annoy some of you but I think you're missing the point. I think those of you who were told ad nauseum by the nurses that you needed a carseat were probably planning to take baby home in a car. To the person who called and asked, for instance, did you question further whether or not you would be allowed to take baby home without a carseat if you were walking home? The reason I'm putting such a fine point on it is that my question is very specific. There are some folks who simply would not need a carseat. Just because some of you can't fathom it doesn't mean it's not so. It's just curiosity that's making me ask. I think the GW info poster came the closest to accurately answering -- I bet that the hospital can only legally require you to have a carseat if you're actually driving (or taxiing) home.

No, the kid has to be in carseat to LEAVE THE HOSPITAL. I think you are missing the point. To LEAVE/WALK OUT OF/REMOVE THE BABY you need a carseat regardless oh how you plan to travel home. Is that clear enough?

Of course I asked if it mattered if parents were walking, riding a bus, taking the metro...

Whoa, allcaps -- I didn't mean to upset you so much! Geez, I'm just curious!

Anyway, that may be Sibley's policy but I bet they can't enforce it. They can't just keep someone's baby from going home because one doesn't have a carseat for walking. That doesn't make any sense. To the other aggravated poster, I think I will ask Sibley, but I can wait until Im there. Like I said, I wasn't asking for personal reasons -- just curious. I asked here since it is an advice forum and I thought maybe someone with relevant personal experience might respond. Why so aggro, ladies?

So aggro? Because you are a pain in the ass and don't seem to understand. And they can send you out to get a car seat. Check the paperwork that you sign. Seriously drop it, you are annoying.

Most car seats double as infant carriers. Even if you don't own a car you almost sure to end up with one because that's what is sold to carry around your baby, and snap into the stroller and the car for the first 6 months. I understand your curiosity, but there probably isn't a real life scenario, in this area, where it's an issue.

I guess it's unfortunate that I annoy you, angry lady, but I'm just asking a question on an advice forum and don't need your permission to keep posting or asking. It's not that I don't understand what you're saying, I just don't think your credentials as an expert on the answer were adequate to convince me that I had a full answer.

Maynie, I know that you're right. This has always been a theoretical question and you are probably right that, at least in this area, it does not pertain to many people. I was still just curious how a hospital would react to somebody who is just walking across the street -- no carrier. I'm something of a libertarian, obviously, and don't like when well-meaning policies start to overreach. But really, again, this is all just curiosity.

I really find it funny that so many people are getting really upset over this. If anger issues, above, doesn't like my posts, why keep coming back? Isn't it as simple as ignoring the thread you keep opening to tell me how annoying I am?
