You thought wrong. |
Then there is another poster on this board that is your soulmate, and she is about to have a baby, and she also likes to get into involved dialogues with posters, mostly telling them how they are responding incorrectly to her threads. You guys would totally hit it off! |
You're goddamn right it's safer. What if you stumble? We're talking about a newborn here. They have no head control and no way of grabbing onto you if you do stumble. Remember the video of Britney Spears falling off of her 10 foot high sandal and almost dropping her kid on his head? (Thank God for her bodyguard). You need both hands to carry a newborn and if you put one out to break your fall guess what ... your kid is likely to go down. And if you don't put a hand out, both of you are going to get hurt. Girlfriend, you have a WHOLE LOT to learn. |
OP, I agree with you. There is no way their "policy" is enforceable if you are leaving walking. Just call the police if they are trying to prevent you from leaving the hospital with YOUR child if you are walking your merry way.
Now, the GW policy makes total sense. |
FWIW, I'm PP 10:26 and I also agree with you, OP! |
This OP poster is totally that other poster. |
Actually the policewont help you out. Don't you think that law enforcement is aware of these poilicies and supports them. |
yeah, i'd be careful of any police involvement in DC. the DC CPS is notorious for throwing the book at well-meaning parents while completely ignoring children who are truly at risk. thinking specifically of the situation at washington hospital center where the hospital held the child because the mom said she wanted a girl instead of a boy. i think if a mom were trying to leave a DC hospital without a carseat she may be at risk of getting involved with the CPS crazies. |

People tried to be nice and you picked at them until they lost their patience. I especially liked your critique of the woman who DID call the hospital - that she didn't ask the right questions. For you. But I am enjoying the wide-eyed, "Why are people so meeeeean to me? I was just cuuuuuuuurious!" |
Don't lump it and say "DC Hospital," because that's not true. It is Sibley that apparently has a rule that you have to have the child in a car seat to leave the hospital. Other area DC hospitals only require the car seat if you are actually leaving by car. There is no DC "law" that states a child must leave a hospital in a car seat. It IS a "law" that they must be in a car seat if they are in a car. |
I did not indicate that the carseat thing is a DC law, I was merely stating that attempting to involve the police in any situation that may be against a hospital's policy may cause some overzealous hospital employee to involve CPS, since it has happened before. I don't think that saying you want a girl instead of a boy is against DC Law but that (and other admittedly bizarre but not illegal behavior on the part of the mom who was suffering from PPD) but she got reported to CPS. |
I find this anonymous, heated discussion incredibly amusing. Why is it that you people get so fired up when someone disagrees with you on an anonymous forum?
Anyway, while policies like the one being discussed are put in place for safety reasons, they are also a way for the litigation shy hospitals to protect themselves. If someone is discharged without a carseat, or any education about the need for one and they got into an accident, someone in our law-suit crazy society would no-doubt sue. Similarly, the reasons new moms are wheeled out of the hospital holding the babies while in the wheel chair (in or out of a carseat) is because if a baby was dropped, the hospital would be sued. Before anyone questions my expertise, my mother has been the manager of L&D for over 30 years. Obviously, some hospitals may enforce these policies more strictly than others. I delivered at Georgetown. DS was pre-term and a little peanut, so he had to have a carseat stress test where they sat him in the seat, with the base, and monitored his breathing and heartrate. Once we were discharged, DH took both the seat and base to the car ahead of us to reinstall. For all the hospital staff knew, we could have thrown the seat away. No one checked. |
I'm a new poster to the thread and I have to say, I find the policy absurd. Why on earth do you need a CARseat if you are walking home? Carseats are designed for use in vehicles. The whole carrier, snap-n-go thing is really a convenience issue. In fact, some people actually suggest we use the carseats less and let the babies lay flat or spend more time on their tummies. I guess I can understand the public health argument behind it, but it still seems a bit extreme if you are leaving without driving. |
