I saw another thread on the IAAT, but there was too much discussion of culture and definition of prepping, etc that it became too cumbersome to find what I was looking for.
My son is in 5th grade AAP. We got a letter last week stating that he will be given an additional math reasoning test before the end of the school year. If he does well, they want him to take the IAAT this summer. If he scores well on the IAAT, he can take Algebra I Honors at the middle school next year. He puts in no effort to study and it is like pulling teeth to do homework. It is hard to motivate him to do so when he gets 100s on tests. He told me last night that he heard the test was hard and is worried. For the first time, HE ASKED if there is anything he can do to prepare for it. HE WANTS to study for and practice for it. Does anyone have any tips, hints, study guides, etc. for him? Also, does anyone know when they plan on having the test? Thanks so much for any help you can provide. |
| Do you mind sharing which elementary school this is ? |
| My son is on track to do this in 5th. Definitely want to hear what others say |

No prep necessary. The test is very easy for any kid strong in
Math. The cutoff should be 98th. |

I would tell him, first of all, to not spend time worrying about it. I would tell him to pay attention to his teacher in class and to do his homework every night. My child's teacher told them to work hard in class and they would do fine on the test, which turned out to be true.
Your son has shown that he is a good math student who learns new concepts easily. If he is ready to be in the honors algebra I class next year, he will do fine on the test. If he is truly not ready yet, then it will be better for him to not be in the class next year. What you don't want is for him to end up in the class but not be ready for it and then be turned off to math. |
PP, how do you know your son is on track to do this in 5th? |
| He is in 3rd currently. For math he goes to the 4th grade AAP class for math. Next year he'll go to a 5th grade AAP class for 6th grade math and so on. In 5th grade he'll be taking 7th grade math and all the testing to go with it. |
Which school is this? My DD's center school 4th grade teacher said there is no further math differentiation among the AAP kids. I didn't even know it is possible to skip grades in AAP. Thanks for sharing. |

I appreciate the time you all took in commenting. I agree with most of you. If he were meant to be in it, he will. If not, he isn't quite ready. The problem I have with that is...
For the first time he wants to study and do work. (I think I hear angels singing hallelujah in the background). I want to encourage and support that. Telling him to pay attention in class and not to worry about it seems not quite so helpful. Maybe if he studies or does extra work it will reduce his stressing as he is taking action himself. |
I know what it is like to have a kid that loves math! I can see that you are supporting and encouraging your son in what he loves. I think that the point is that he can help himself to be calm about the test by paying attention in class and working hard on the homework his teacher assigns. By the time they are taking the sixth grade math class (in your child's case, the one he will be taking while he is still in fifth grade) they are being taught all they need to know to take the algebra readiness test. I may be misunderstanding, but I read your posts to say that he doesn't do his homework presently but now that he is worried about the IAAT, you are hoping to find workbooks focused on the IAAT for him to do. If he has not been interested in studying and doing homework up to this point, a perfect starting point now that he is interested is for him to focus on the assigned work and do his best. Even though he gets great grades as it is now, 1) at some point, he may not be able to get those great grades if he is not doing the work, and, 2) learning is not all about the grades: he may find he actually learns more when he pays close attention and does the assigned work. My children's math teachers sent home lists of online sites that had fun math games that kids could play when their homework was done but they still wanted to do more math. Maybe your son's teacher has a similar list, or you could ask him or her for some suggestions. |
| An online search for IAAT sample questions will give your kid an idea of what sort of questions to expect and may set his mind at ease that the test won't have any surprises. Practice tests are also available on Amazon, etc. |
Are you sure you are understanding this correctly? You can be "on track" because that's just how AAP goes but the child has to qualify for further differentiation I have a 5th grader and I thought: 3rd grade AAP takes a combination of 3rd and 4th grade Math, takes 3rd grade SOL 4th grade AAP takes 4th grade and 5th grade math and takes 4th grade SOL. 5th grade AAP takes 6th grade math and takes 6th grade SOL. (But now I see a PP here say that the IAAT can be taken summer before 6th grade? Which would make sense since there are some 6th graders who take Algebra in the middle school. 6th grade takes 7th grade SOL. During 6th grade, they take the IAAT. Must score 91 and pass advanced on SOL to qualify for Algebra 1 in 7th grade. |
It sounds like PP is not doing the normal AAP math track. |
Is your child in 3rd grade Gen Ed or 3rd grade AAP? |
