Trump and the Muslim database

Jews were true victims. They were not killing anyone

That's not what Hitler thought, though.

~sigh~ Mr. Steele, this is grossly unfair to Mr. Trump. What really happened is that a media guy asked him a trolling question and he responded with evasions as any reasonably smart politician would given the uncertainty regarding how this issue is going to play out. But don't take that from me. Even the liberal Kevin Drum recognizes this at Mother Jones of all places:

http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2015/11/press-needs-stop-encouraging-republican-lunacy-toward-muslims

Seriously, Mr. Trump says a lot of wacky stuff, but he has not in fact advocated a database registering muslims.

What? You are painting Trump out to be worse that Sarah Palin: "oh, that darn liberal media asking her what magazines she reads. How mean and nasty". If someone asks you if you want to set up a database of Muslims, you say, "no". It's not that hard. If you misspeak, you issue a clarification. Beyond answering the reporters question about whether he would support such a database, Trump went further and said his administration would absolutely implement such a thing.

I'm hardly saying that; Mr. Trump can certainly handle the media without my help. I had not seen Mr. Trump say that a Trump Administration "would absolutely implement such a thing." If you provide some citation for that rather surprising proposition, I shall recant forthwith. Otherwise, I think there is little to see here.

What is frightening is not that he says it, or that the GOP has been courting fanatics, but that his poll numbers go up. Americans are clearly receptive to this racism and xenophobia.

One correction. He did not say "absolutely", but rather "certainly". Watch the video here if you can:

For some reason the story changes the sequence of the quotes.

Yep, it's on tape.

The fact that he is so popular despite his immoral stance(s) (and yes, I think creating a Muslim database is immoral; so is blindly turning away refugees) is what is so worrisome to me. I am a minority, and a woman, though not a Muslim (though could easily mistaken for one). I am just truly scared about where the country is heading.

That's interesting. Listening to the exchange, my guess is that he will be able to walk that back as a misstatement. I found it hard to follow and had to listen to it a couple of times to understand, but of course I didn't see the context of the whole press conference. Will be interesting to see if it gets traction.

wow, the New McCarthyism. Didn't think Id live to see it again. Will he call it Trumpism or keep true to its roots and call it McCarthyism I wonder.

How about fascism? That seems about right to me.

Huh? What's unclear about it?

I, personally, found the audio of the question hard to follow and it was a very quick exchange. YMMV, of course.

We should also keep a database of middle-aged white men who may decide to cut you up and eat you, as well as high-school and college kids whose parents f* them up.

What's it like being Muslim? Well, it's hard to find a decent halal pizza place and occasionally there is a hashtag calling for your genocide...

If you had trouble following that and had to listen to the first 20 seconds more than once, I'm not sure what to say...it couldn't have been said more clearly. "Beyond a data base we need X,Y,Z" "I would certainly implement that"....are those statements somehow vague to you?

Seriously. I actually listened to it several times, because I honestly wanted to believe this was a misstatement. There wasn't. And it seems that all the news outlets have heard the same thing

Well, the sad truth of it is that such a database probably already exists about everyone.
