Insurance Coverage with Cigna in Maryland

i am contemplating switching from Kaiser (DH is fed) to Cigna (I am a MD county employee). Does anyone know if Cigna covers 100% for IVF? We are with Shady Grove and our RE made mention that Cigna covers 100% for state employees. But, I am unsure if this is for a particular county or a state employee not a specific county employee. Can anyone offer any insight on this? We have had one failed cycle using Kaiser. Our costs were around 4500.00 but we would like to use Cigna and be able to pay for PGS out of pocket to increase our chances of a BFP. Thanks.

The state of Maryland has mandatory infertility/ if coverage. Of course there are limitations, restrictions and exclusions -- but most likely your coverage would be better if your plan was based in MD (purchased through a MD employer).

The state of Maryland (as an employee) theoretically should follow these guidelines. If for some reason there is an exclusion, if you live in MD you can buy a private plan off the exchange or directly from the insurer.

If you have a choice during this time - I would switch off Kaiser. For IF / IVF you will want the flexibility of a PPO - to switch doctors, flex on meds, see specialists etc. You can always go back to Kaiser when you are in the next stage.

I'm sorry I know about Cigna. However if the option is available to you MD IPA is a decent federal choice too. They cover 3 rounds of IVF. ICSI and assisted hatching are covered, and meds are a few hundred dollars copay per cycle.

MD IPA is also a choice since DH can switch to that one via the Fed..

This is what I"m thinking. Thanks.

For what it's worth, I love being on Kaiser with a child. The conveniences really pay off then. I can pretty much get a good appointment within a week and I love the easy email communication with the pediatrician and that I get lab results in real time with the doctor. Also like the urgent care, since I hate hospital ERs and the trillion hour wait.

For fertility it's been fine though a little more confusing than when I was with BCBS. I was working with SG before then anyway. Pays 50%. I was quoted for IVF $2500 or something near that. Not sure why $5000 for you. Maybe with ICSI etc?

OP, I'm a little confused. Are you contemplating switching from your current federal coverage to coverage with your Maryland county employer? FYI, state employee health plans are different from county employee health plans.

Most Maryland counties self-insure so they are not required to cover IVF. If you are contemplating switching from the federal plan to your county employer plan, you should check with your county employer's human resources office about the IVF benefits that are included.

Yes, I am considering switching from current federal coverage thru my DH to coverage with my Maryland employer. I have checked with my human resources office but have been given the run around. My RE confirmed that previous patients employed by my county had better coverage thru Cigna than I do with Kaiser.

You should request a plan booklet from the HR or benefits office. I don't know which county you work for, but I found the Montgomery County employee benefits site here http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/ohr/benefits/egi/benefit.html and the plan booklets are available. You should, of course, get the 2016 booklets to see what's covered. And don't just get a plan summary, get the plan booklet which lists all of the coverages in the plan.
