Lee isn't in the "Brookland area". It's in Edgewood. It's closer to Eckington, for example, than Brookland. The plan is to stay 1) in Ward 5 and 2) within 1 mile of the current location. this may be Brookland but we don't know yet, and frankly, until leases are signed and announced you can't count on anything as far as school locations are concerned. |
Hang on! you are taking into account the NEW location of Bridges, yes? |
Maybe that's a silly question but how does it work if you turn down your #1 school and so you are not on one waiting list, how do you still get into a school? From what I understand you can't do Round 2 if you were matched. |
Yeah. That story sounds fishy. |
This is why you have to be very careful (and realistic in terms of commute) with your rankings. If that happens, then you can't apply until after round 2--essentially filling out an application in June, and you will be placed at the end of the waitlist (unless you apply to a school where you have a preference--say, your inboundary school for PK3/PK4--in which case you will be placed on the waitlist after the other people with your preference.) |
It was for PK4. We were already in a school, our current school for PK3. |
If it weren't your #1 school, you have no business rating it #1. I wouldn't say it was fishy, perhaps PP got into a school that didn't have WL or in her IB at K+. |
And people wonder why the lottery is so screwy. If she had just done her research on the front end, this wouldn't have happened? Did she not know about the commute? I don't understand why she ranked it #1 if she knew about the commute. This is what is so frustrating to me about the lottery people like the poster here - she was in a school, went through the lottery - got matched and then...turned it down because, WAH she didn't want to drive in her car? |
Sometimes, people make assumption or even try out a commute, and decide later that it is not doable. It's hard to know what it will be like to do a commute 180 days a year, two times a day. People think that they can make things work, and the day-to-day stress of a commute proves to be too much. It's too bad that these people didn't realize this before they entered the lottery, but the consequence is purely on them--they have to deal with the commute or withdraw. And, as PP did, they may be wasting a good lottery draw on a school they can't attend, when they could have listed a more realistic school and gotten in. It's just the nature of the system. |
Yup, we know about the new location. We are located in North Petworth (sometimes called Manor Park, but I don't want to get into that debate right now...), so the move is actually just as easy for us. I think the commute to IT/Lee is not bad from more southern locations in Petworth, but it would require us to get onto N. Capital and all that grossness. I've never driven for commuting before and hate driving, so I think Bridges just makes more sense, since we can presumably walk/bus to the school. Thank you to everyone for your help! |
It was a case of buyers remorse. A little of the "grass isn't always greener". I wasn't expecting to get match. I'm sure someone was glad I turned it down. |
Submitted in December. Just confirmed that I did indeed do it this morning, but list unchanged. |
Oh, for heaven's sake. Don't get in a twist. People turning down lottery spots is NOT why the lottery is difficult. |
But see, it makes the lottery more complicated. The system waits on you. There is a cost involved. It's frustrating that you didn't think before you acted. |
No, people entering for fun is. |
