Why was that girl in Syria?

I think it's heart-breaking and from all accounts she wasn't some wahoo deciding to go hiking on the edge of a war zone for fun. She truly had a good soul and felt a calling to go to a horrible part of the world.

That being said, goodness and well-meaning intent doesn't negate the fact that it was a reckless and dangerous decision. I take issue with those who say our government doesn't do enough to rescue our citizens. My frustration, even anger, is that there is an expectation that people can make poor choices (go to Syria, Korean War vet going to Pyongyang, hikers in Iran to name a recent few) and then expect us to expend time, lots of taxpayer money, and plenty of diplomatic capital trying to free them.

Another beautiful soul taken too soon. Regardless of her motives to be there, she didn't deserve to die the way she did. From what I read, she was a selfless, charitable soul. May God help her family go through this tragedy

What's it like being Muslim? Well, it's hard to find a decent halal pizza place and occasionally there is a hashtag calling for your genocide...

I posted this earlier in the thread, and linked to an article from that page. The linked article didn't support her accusations at all. By all accounts, Kayla was a very peaceful person.

She was no stranger to the region or the issues, and she chose sides (against Israel).

Unfortunately for her, IS viewed her as an Infidel (therefore property, like a slave) and a valuable hostage as an American.

No, she was involved in an organization that encourages nonviolent protests against the Israeli military in the West Bank and Gaza.

I also am floored by people calling her a "girl." She was 26 years old and a grown woman.

She was walking Palestinian kids to school to protect them from Israeli settlers. I find the Israel response to her death disturbing.

Based on news reports and a statement for Doctors Without Borders, she was not at all working for the organization. she was volunteering at a refuge camp in Turkey and went to Syria on what was supposed to be a one day trip with a friend who had been hired by DWB. she was not going to help anybody, just to visit the place. she seemed to be a nice and generous person, but going into Syria basically as a tourist to visit DWB was a very, very stupid decision.
