What is going on in Arizona?

And what evidence do you have that "the gays" are targeting children for some nefarious purpose? Being gay does not make anyone a pedophile, and there is plenty of evidence that gay couples who adopt make excellent parents.

My thoughts on your "siding with Putin" would invoke Godwin's Law, so I'll just ask if you really understand who/what you're "siding" with?

Of course, not all gays are pedophiles and not all pedophiles are gay. But there still is an undeniable correlation. Look at all of the priest abuse scandals.

The terms homosexual and heterosexual refer to adult sexual attraction. People who are sexually attracted to children are neither. The sex of the child they molest has more to do with access than it does the child's sex.

While gay pedophile cases are reported significantly more often to the national news media, it is still a fact that that same sex pedophilia only accounts for between 10-30% of the total cases of pedophilia, so heterosexuals are significantly more likely to be a danger to children than homosexuals.

The Catholic Church's review of the child abuse scandal determined that homosexuality wasn't the cause. Rather it was that there was greater opportunity to abuse boys than girls.

While the conclusion is most likely correct, I'm not sure the Catholic Church is a reliable authoritative source when it comes to anything having to with the abuse scandals.

Yet, lately, they've been passing measures that would make Southern states look liberal. What's going on?

Why is that state becoming so reactionary? Have the demographics recently changed?

Actually it does have a long reputation for that. See Barry Goldwater. See The Arizona Republic, which forty years ago when I spent time in Arizona was ranting daily against New York, New Yorkers, liberals, Democrats, etc.

There's always been a loony fringe there. Today there are far more of that loony fringe all over encouraging idiotic behavior, so it gets more publicity &c. They also feel far more threatened since they were a clear majority in the 1960s-70s where now they (right wing white people) are /will be the minority there.

But the latest controversy isn't about illegals. It's about gays - the religious freedom/don't have to serve gays proposed law.

By illegals I think you mean Mexicans? I hadn't heard that there was a strong LGTB presence in Mexican American communities?

So why the over reaction to gays?

You'd make a great Ugandan.

The governor will not sign it. The business interests are opposed to it- think no Super Bowl. Other businesses have said they will not relocate to Az b/c it's hard to recruit employees. She will wait as long as she can and kill it.

^^^ This. My uncle and his new wife are a case in point. It's embarassing.

The old libertarian grumps turn on their TVs and radios and are told the world is at war with their "values" and "freedom." They've lost the plot. Their politicians profit from spreading similar fears.

Also, there aren't a lot of homeless or urban poor in AZ. It's too hot to live on the streets, and you can't make it in the summer if you can't afford a/c. And that's just the way the majority of AZonians like it.

We live there. I had hoped to help "turn Arizona purple" but now am counting the months until I get out of here.

What are your thoughts on Fred DuVal, Democrat running for governor?

Good for her. Do you think she's going to get shunned by the right now?

No. Many of us on the right thought she should - many members of Congress on the right told her she should veto it. There will be some "fringe" people who are upset, but they are in the minority.

Any data to back that up? It looks like it was a party line vote in AZ. That sounds like more than fringe support.
