It's not as if the state has a long-held reputation as a bulwark of conservatism.
Yet, lately, they've been passing measures that would make Southern states look liberal. What's going on? Why is that state becoming so reactionary? Have the demographics recently changed? |
| It's full of old retired racists who moved there from other parts of the country and freaked out about all the Mexicans everywhere. |
| How liberal would you be if illegals were overrunning your property, schools and hospitals? Everybody loses their cool at some point. |

It kind of is. Plus, the Governor is crazy. |
White conservatives fleeing California and tons of retired people from the Midwest, especially small town Midwest. That's what's wrong with Arizona. |
Hmmmm.... they aren't losing their cool in Texas. |
But the latest controversy isn't about illegals. It's about gays - the religious freedom/don't have to serve gays proposed law. By illegals I think you mean Mexicans? I hadn't heard that there was a strong LGTB presence in Mexican American communities? So why the over reaction to gays? |
On this one point, I'm with Putin: I have no problem with gays, so long as they leave the kids alone. |
And what evidence do you have that "the gays" are targeting children for some nefarious purpose? Being gay does not make anyone a pedophile, and there is plenty of evidence that gay couples who adopt make excellent parents. My thoughts on your "siding with Putin" would invoke Godwin's Law, so I'll just ask if you really understand who/what you're "siding" with? |
I take it you are trying to be funny? Since no one is even claiming that the reason for AZ's proposed law is child protection (from a non existent threat). The reason given is "religious freedom". |
Of course, not all gays are pedophiles and not all pedophiles are gay. But there still is an undeniable correlation. Look at all of the priest abuse scandals. |

From what I've seen, the media allows and encourages the Tea Party to pretend relevance in AZ. These guys get news time, and they are raging. The old libertarian grumps turn on their TVs and radios and are told the world is at war with their "values" and "freedom." They've lost the plot. Their politicians profit from spreading similar fears.
Also, there aren't a lot of homeless or urban poor in AZ. It's too hot to live on the streets, and you can't make it in the summer if you can't afford a/c. And that's just the way the majority of AZonians like it. We live there. I had hoped to help "turn Arizona purple" but now am counting the months until I get out of here. |
Putins laws do not seem to demonstrate that distinction. |
I'd imagine you also spout things like... "Of course, not all terrorists are Muslims, and not all Muslims are terrorists. But there still is an undeniable correlation." And, "Of course, not all illegal immigrants are Mexican, and not all Mexicans in this country are illegal immigrants. But there still is an undeniable correlation." And, "Of course, not all Tea Partiers are racist homophobes, and not all racist homophobes belong to the Tea Party. But there still is an undeniable correlation." Pedophilia is a very specific profile, and very few heterosexuals are pedophiles and very few gays are pedophiles. And, despite the Catholic church abuse scandal, very few Catholic priests are either gay or pedophiles. |
The Catholic Church's review of the child abuse scandal determined that homosexuality wasn't the cause. Rather it was that there was greater opportunity to abuse boys than girls. |
