can anyone recommend their OB in DC?

Anonymous
I am in need of a new OB after a terrible experience with my current one. I would prefer to stay in DC, and also to deliver at Sibley in the future ( i had a great experience there 9 months ago) , so if you love your OB I would love to know why. My main issues with the place I am leaving are: too many doctors, rude and unprofessional administrative staff, and difficulty getting appointments. I recently had a miscarriage, and was told I was miscarrying by a medical assistant instead of an MD. I have had my issues with them in the past, but this was the last straw.

Thanks in advance!

Dr. Susan Hurson -- she's a solo practitioner with one nurse and one receptionist. I've been with her for five years; she delivered my first child and will deliver my second soon. She's kind but direct, great about answering questions, and wonderful about returning calls. She's very common sense but tends to err on the side of caution, which I appreciate.

Things to keep in mind: She doesn't participate in any insurance plans, but her staff will submit all of your charges to your insurance company for out-of-network reimbursement. Also, she doesn't deliver babies most weekends; she shares call with a large practice, so if you deliver on a weekend when she's not on call, you will be delivered by a doctor you don't know.

Dr. Russell Bridges - he's my OB, my sister in-laws OB and I know of two other friends that he's delivered their children. He's solo as well, delivers 95% of his babies, takes the time to talk to you and has a great bed side manor.

Best of luck!

Dr. Virginia Thompson at 24th and M, near Foggy Bottom. She's solo, with one nurse and one receptionist, and is a BC/BS preferred provider. She delivered my son about six weeks ago, as well as least three of my friends' kids in the past three or four years, and we all love her. She's very thorough and responsive to questions/concerns. She rotates on call weekends with two other solo practitioners, but delivers for her patients during the week.

Dr. Brendan Burke (Friendship Heights practice/Sibley hospital). His staff is wonderful, he returns calls within hours always the same day; I've been going to him for nearly 15 years and he is so warm, so humane, such a decent caring human being.

I second the recomendation for Dr. Virginia Thompson. She delivered my son and couldn't have been more wonderful. I seriously had one of the easiest deliveries in the world and I owe it in large part to her. I also NEVER faced any wait times in her office, never felt rushed, and loved the intimacy of a solo practice. She is more direct than "warm and fuzzy" but I feel that she is very thorough and concerned about her patients.

OK, I realize this might not be up your alley, but I'm going to recommend, anyway. my OB is part of the georgetown univ. practice. that means sometimes long waits, and obviously you'd have to deliver at georgetown. BUT, I just adore my OB, who was absolutely stellar throughout my pg and also when I experienced postpartum complications. her name is Christine Colie, and I think she's amazing. the nurses there have always been nice, and I was very happy with the care I received there while delivering. good luck!

Dr. Malcom DeSouza. He's a solo practicioner on Mass Ave (a block up from the Pottery Barn). He's really sweet and even though I never thought I'd be ok with a man OB, I have been convinced by his personal service, time and attention to my concerns and sweet office staff. I was at one of the biggest practices in DC and felt like just a number to them, so I totally empathize with your plight!

PP here. Oops I meant Crate and Barrel. Oh, and he accepts most insurances too!

Dr. John Gschwend with Contemporary Women's Health in Bethesda. He also sees patients on Fridays at Sibley. He recently delivered my DS and delivered my friend's two children. Although he's not exactly warm and fuzzy, I have consistently received excellent care from him. Although I've never been bothered by it, I know some have complained that the Bethesda office is too crowded. Also, the practice recently moved into larger offices in Bethesda and the Sibley office is much much quieter.

Dr Alan Birnkrant at 2311 M Street. He was excellent during the delivery, and the whole office is very well run.

Another vote for Dr. Bridges.

He delivers at Sibley. He has delivered for a few friends of mine as well and we have all had the same experience - love him!

Q - the references to the group practices, do those refer to Reiter & Hill? I've been going there, haven't had a bad experience, but I also haven't gotten much personal attention/time from the doctors either. After having had a miscarriage last year I'm wondering if I do need just some general help/advice... haven't gotten much from the doctors after my post-D&C visit (but then again, can they even do anything else?). ... Thoughts, advice?

Women OB/GYN - Drs Nancy Sanders and Janet Schaffel -- LOVE them! I left Reiter & Hill after a bad experience with them (off topic -- Reiter has the WORST bedside manner). These docs are actually in the same building a few floors down at 1145 19th Street, NW. It's a small practice, easy to get appointments, admin staff are pleasant and the doctors are great. Sanders delivered my daughter, but I would have been comfortable with either one and saw both throughout the duration of my pregnancy. One downside -- they don't accept any insurance but will file all paperwork with your insurance company for you. Also, they deliver at Sibley.
